New install--iTunes not 'remembering' my apps?

My laptop required a clean install of Win7. All data and (in particular) my computer's iTunes files and folders are backed up on Carbonite.

Before I start the process of selectively restoring from Carbonite I setup iTunes and iCloud with my account and my iPod and iPhone.

Here's what I do not understand. Why isn't iTunes 'sensing' (since it knows me and my phone) that it does not have locally all the apps that are on my phone and 'know' that it does have those and many more backed up on Apple's servers and simply, automatically download all the apps to iTunes as they were before?

If I were to execute a 'restore' myself from the cloud then I'd get a bunch of data that I've already updated on the phone that would be wiped or, worse, cause the restored 'old' data (contacts, appointments, etc) corrupt my 'newer' phone data and then automatically sync to the other sources that sync to phone creating a data mess. That's why I was looking to restore just the apps to my local library.

What am I missing here?

I know that I can obtain my result by restoring from Carbonite but that's going to be more confusing so I was hoping for the above as a solution

When you delete purchased content from your library iTunes may ask if you want to recycle the files connected to the items you are deleting and/or ask if you want to hide the items from your purchase history. For instance I recently removed a track that I had by Rolf Harris from my library. I have an archive copy, but I don't want it in my library any more, and I don't want to see it in my purchase history either, so I confirmed that I wanted it removed. In your case you are going to want to redownload these apps, so hiding them means that you would then have to take an extra step to unhide them again before they would show in your purchase history. Hence my suggestion that if iTunes asks if it should hide the items you say no. Of course you may have one or two apps that you once purchased, but no longer have any use for, in which case you may want to hide those particular items from the purchase history as part of the process of tidying up.

Having your attention I will rely upon your good nature to possibly answer these questions/annoyances that I have regarding iTunes.

1. Must I manually mark podcasts as played to get rid of them even when the podcast has been played (either in total or partially) on the Nano?

2. If I start a podcast or tune in error (which is very easy to do), I cannot find a 'stop playing, unload the audio and close player) control. I only find a FF and pause button?

Thanks,

Mark

  1. I don't believe the iPod nano will automatically remove podcasts. As long as you sync the device, and your rules say are something like "Sync 5 most recent unplayed episodes", they will get removed when you sync.
  2. Pause should stop the music playing. You can then use the menu controls to choose something else. There is no need to "unload the audio" as you put it. It will stay ready to resume if you click play, or until you choose something else. Close the player? I'm not sure I know what you mean. Which iPod nano is it? Ah, I see the current one (7th) is a bit like a mini iPod touch, in which case press the home button to get to the home screen.
