Cannot see ipod in My Computer or iTunes

After running Windows XP repair installation, I lost the ability to access all USB devices as Mass Storage Devices and am also unable to see them in product specific transfer applications. This includes the iPod and iTunes. The devices appear in device manager and are said to be working fine and yet they are not recognized by any application as being available. Can anyone at least help me regain access to my iPod? I've tried reinstalling iTunes and restarting the iPod but that does not make any difference.

Thanks,
Stu

I am a computer idiot. I have a nano and an old operating system Mac OS X. All of the sudden my nano will not show up on my computer or in iTunes. My husband's nano will show up--what gives? My USB cable will allow me to charge it and I can listen, but I can't add anything when it won't show up in iTunes.

I just read the thread below and I don't really understand any of it. Is it the version of iTunes? It is the USB cable? Is it my computer? I don't even know where to go to get help.

Please help, I'm clueless!

here's what microsotft says:
To resolve this problem, delete the UpperFilters registry value and the LowerFilters registry value. These values may cause access problems. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.

2. Locate and then click the UpperFilters registry value. This value is located in the following registry subkey:
HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E980-E325 11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

4. Locate and then click the LowerFilters registry value. This value is located in the following registry subkey:
HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10 318}

5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

6. Exit Registry Editor.

7. Restart the computer.

it worked perfectly for me!make sure to follow the directions. it's easy and resolves many Windows XP problems related to ipods. for more info try microsoft help and support and just serch for ipod. it list a bit more info there. it doesn't say anything about reinstalling the apple software, but just to be thorough i unistalled itunes and quicktime before anything just to start with a clean slate, then reinstalled them from my ipod disk after the restart. then i downloaded all the updates from apple. my ipod has never worked better. good luck.

I just got a brand new iPod Photo 20GB and its not recognizing, it has never recognized on Windows or iTunes. I have tried everything listed here and still it doesn't work. I am wondering if the usb cable is faulty, but it does charge when it is plugged into the ac adapter. Other than that could it be the iPod is faulty?

This isn't the first time this has happened to me. I went into the apple store and they got my 4g nano working again. but as of last week my ipod wont read again. When i plug the charger into my computer a window pops up that says USB device not recognized. I've done everything under the sun to try to get this thing to work and i dont know what to do next.

Any Suggestions,

add me to the list. I checked the registry and I didn't have an upper & lower value at all. Since I have the original cd that came with my ipod (updater date 10-25-05) I tried installing this on another computer.

Question: When should my usb cable be recognized? Immediately when plugged in or once the ipod is connected to it? Either way, nothing is recognized by the computer.

When I took my ipod to the Apple store and they tried putting in disk mode, they showed and told me that the ipod wasn't even recognized this way.

I know that apple is reading these discussions because the the administer is deleting entries/comments.

I'll understand if a mistake was made (itunes/firmware/etc). Give me hope that a resolution is being made available AT NO COST TO ME. And trust me, I wouldn't be ranting if I had been irresponsible in my care for the ipod. In this case though, it was treated with the greatest respect because I wanted to enjoy it for a long time. Unfortunately, because of what's happened, my ipod lasted less than 13 months. negative joy!

hi connie,

no - not really, i've a different problem now!

itunes now registers the ipod but after about 2/3 minutes of "do not disconnect", itunes doesnt recongise the ipod and stops updating.

i've a 20gb ipod for which was about 19gb full, now it's approx 1gb full because of the above problem.

it's also telling me that i've to "run a Chkdsk utility" - how do i do this????

help, help, help!!!!

Ok. I fixed the problem myself (thanks Apple and
Microsoft!). It turns out my problem was from a
faulty SPTD driver installation. I downloaded this
driver from:
http://www.duplexsecure.com/downloads/SPTDinst-v135-x8
6.exe

Then I started the computer in Safe Mode, went to Run
under Start, put in quotes the exact file location of
the file I downloaded above and then with a space
after the quotes, put the word remove in. I clicked
okay and it stated it couldn't verify the SPTD driver
installation and to reinstall it. Well, I restarted
and since then, all my USB devices work as they are
supposed to work.

You can find out a little more about this at:
http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/windows-xp/

en-drive-letter.html

Anyway maybe this can help someone else in the same
boat.
