Cannot see ipod in My Computer or iTunes

After running Windows XP repair installation, I lost the ability to access all USB devices as Mass Storage Devices and am also unable to see them in product specific transfer applications. This includes the iPod and iTunes. The devices appear in device manager and are said to be working fine and yet they are not recognized by any application as being available. Can anyone at least help me regain access to my iPod? I've tried reinstalling iTunes and restarting the iPod but that does not make any difference.

Thanks,
Stu

the frimware update for the ipod turned my 2 day old video into a paper weight. yesterday when i plugged my ipod in, itunes asked me to download the newest itunes, so i did. then, immediately, after downloading itunes urges me to udate the ipod firmware. i hadnt gotten used to the o.s that was already on my new ipod so i postponed the update. i uploaded 200 songs, 5 music videos, and superman, worked beautifully. today i plugged it in to my pc and itunes urged me to update the firmware again, so i did. everything went smooth, i unplugged it and saw no indicator saying to plug it in to my wall charger, so i didnt, an hour later i plugged Giada (my ipod) back in to upload some ebooks, the "do not disconnect" screen frozeimmidiately my pc would not recognize it neither would itunes, ive been at it for hours and nothing has changed. ive tried Giada in three other computers its the same with all of them. it works otherwise, listening to music, but while plugged into my pc its a peice of metal.
does anybody know whats up, and how to fix it?

BTW, I keep getting "Power Surge on Hub Port ....USB
device has exceeded power limits of its hub port"
Baloney! All my usb ports are 2.0. This is the
screwy-est!

USB ports are 2.0 because they process data faster, but I don't believe they'll provide more power. Try connected to a USB port that is directly connected to your PC, as opposed to a hub port.

My iPod mini has spontaneously begun to connect to my computer; hopefully my new iPod will work as well.

Everything was working fine this morning with both my 4th and 5th gen ipods. Unfortunately, I upgraded to itunes 7 and now the usb port comes up with an error message and I cannot see either ipod in my computer or in itunes. I restored the computer to a time before it upgraded itunes but that didn't work either. It was perfect before it upgraded. I have tried everything in this string of posts - any other suggestions?

I am having the same problem but am only moderately computer savey, thus I don't know some of these terms such as hub?. I got the 2nd gen shuffle but neither my computer nor itunes recognizes it. I keep getting a device malfunction balloon. I tried to plug it into another usb port on the back of the computer, same thing. i tried to update the driver but it can't find the correct driver. I'm thinking it's got to be a driver problem or the hardware is faulty. Any suggestions? Should I go for this downloaded fix?

I had the same problem after I got this also as a present in X-MAS. My ipod is a fifth generation ipod video 30GB. While I was downloding the new version of Itunes I noticed that a program called Norton Ghost from my computer was interfiering with the download. Because of this it took very long. And the Ipod never showed up in Itunes. Then the solution for me was to remove Norton Ghost from my computer. I returned my ipod since it was only 2 days old. When I arrived at the store they checked my ipod with two computers and it did not work. They checked my ipod and found Norton ghost in it. They gave me a new one. And I started again from scratch and now it is working. perfectley well. HOPE THIS WORKS FOR YOU.

NOTHING is worth this much frustration!!! Nothing happens when I plug the iPod into my computer with Windows XP but when I plug it into my laptop with Windows 98 it has no problems finding the iPod. Problem is Windows 98 doesn’t support iTunes and my laptop won’t allow Windows XP. I have another “R” for apple to add to their list - RETURN! None of their troubleshooting suggestions work. My USB ports work with every other possible contraption excluding iPod.

Hello everyone! I have been having the same problem over the last several days. It is so frustrating. I have been on the phone with Apple support 3 times for this issue, and THEY HAVE BEEN NO HELP. I have used my mini ipod for 2 years and never had a problem. I just purchased a 5th Gen Ipod and as soon as I upgraded to Itunes 7, neither Ipod would register on my computer or itunes. I was told that is was my computer, not the Ipod. I have 6 USB ports and none would work. After 3 days, the problem was simple to fix. If you are having this same problem, obviously there is something in the new Itunes 7 that is causing the USB ports not to work. Here is what I did. Go to My computer, view system information, hardware, device manager, usb contollers and reinstall the usb control device. as soon as i did this, the computer and itunes FINALLY recognized by Ipod. hope this helps.

Please help!

I have an iPod mini and it was working fine with the iTunes sofware until I installed the latest version. Now it does not show up under devices, it did when i first installed the new version of iTunes but 10 minutes after disconnecting my iPod i tried to re-connect it and all I got was a message on my iPod screen saying 'do not disconnect' but nothing was happening with it. Can someone please tell me what to do! krlro@hotmail.com

Went to the Apple store and found out my HD on my iPod is the culprit. So I purchased a Nano with the intentions of getting the Mini repaired and now I`ll have two. Oh well...

Interesting side note: The Apple sales rep told me iPods are built to fail in 2-3 years time. The rationale: The technology will be so outdated, you`ll want the newest iPod. To me thats a pretty rotten marketing approach by Apple but then again, seems lots of maufacturers are thinking this way.

No, I have a mac too and my ipod and iTunes are doing the same thing as the thousands of other people on here have been complaining about. I don't remember when I did the update on iTunes or my iPod last but it had been working since I bought both March 07 (my mac and I have the 30GB video ipod) and all of a sudden, it just quit working, won't recognize so the latest music I have purchased? --I cannot transfer to my iPod!!! It appears there is absolutely no solution at this point. Apple needs to recognize the issue and get a fix in place soon
