Cannot see ipod in My Computer or iTunes

After running Windows XP repair installation, I lost the ability to access all USB devices as Mass Storage Devices and am also unable to see them in product specific transfer applications. This includes the iPod and iTunes. The devices appear in device manager and are said to be working fine and yet they are not recognized by any application as being available. Can anyone at least help me regain access to my iPod? I've tried reinstalling iTunes and restarting the iPod but that does not make any difference.

Thanks,
Stu

Intersting comments about what the apple guy told you. I just had the same issue with my Sony Ericsson cell phone, cannot send MMS because of updates and they won't fix, just oudated now. Had the phone only a year. I have had my 30GB video iPod only since March 06 and from what I am hearing, it may be toast as well. A friend of mine just got an 80GB for Christmas and hers works fine but I am seeing a lot of posts similar with new products as gifts and theirs is not working.

Hey guys. I was having the same problem but i think i found out a solution. If anyone has a lexmark printer or anytype of printer connected disconnect it then try connecting the ipod normally. If that doesnt work try it with diskmode on. and if those two dont work try my last bit of advice. disconnect all of your usb devices. if your mouse and keyboard connect by usb leave those in. then try connecting the ipod.i currently only have 3 usb devices connected ones my mouse ones my keyboard and the other is the ipod and its working well. Hope it helps...

dont know if u have resolved ur problem or not. but here is how i fixed mine:

when the ipod is doing this the usb thing reads it as a "USB Mass Storage Device"..
to fix it, and make the ipod work in itunes and everything, plug ur ipod into the computer and then u need to uninstall the "USB Mass Storage Device" in My Devices..
when it uninstalls it will ask u to restart ur computer, dont worry about doing that, because as soon as i uninstalled the "USB Mass Storage Device" thing, my ipod started working again perfectly..

I am sorry I ever got this piece of crap Nano. What a waste of money since it obviously has major problems and Apple doesn't seem to do much about corrections.

Why oh why did I get the Ipod instead of a regular MP3 player that allows you to easily drag songs to the device.

I can't believe these things ever got so popular! I put the thing in a drawer and will probably never even use it. Thanks a bunch CrApple

On Windows, initially I couldn't get my iPod video 30GB to be recognized. After playing with it I discovered my problem was with drive letters.

Usually devices like the iPod will search for the first available letter, but for some reason mine was trying to connect as E: (the first one after the default hard drive and CD ROM drive). I had logical/network drives taking up several letters starting at E:. When I remapped the drive on E: to another letter, the iPod showed up the next time I plugged it in!

Spent a lot of time with tech support. They didn't suggest trying this and haven't seen it in these forums so I thought I'd mention it here for all you desperate people.

HTH,
Chris

P.S. For those that think the cables are fine because the iPod charges, you may be wrong. Each cable has many wires in them. The power lines may be fine but the others may be damaged. Try to borrow a friend's cable or try on a friend's computer if possible.

STILL frustrated!!! I've tried everything and now I'm at a loss. Both of my children received iPod nanos for Christmas, one is a 4GB and the other is a 2GB. Neither of them work... I called Apple and that was a joke. All they did was confirm that I had Windows XP with Service Pack 2 and that I had installed iTunes correctly. He mentioned that he felt that I didn't have a 2.0 USB port but I informed him that I am currently running a DVD ReWriter that requires 2.0 USB. His next suggestion was to contact the makers of my computer... UGH how aggravating, this is clearly a problem with their product!!! I appreciate everyone's suggestions but so far none of them have worked for me... I will continue to try everyone’s ideas and hopefully one will work eventually.

I am completely dumbfounded by the fact that Apple is ignoring this gigantic issue. I have tried EVERYTHING suggested, contacted Microsoft, reloaded, downloaded, reset, disk mode, you name it, I tried it. The kicker is, I bought TWO nanos, one for my daughter and one for my husband. They work perfectly on my son's desktop but cannot be recognized on my laptop. Almost 500 bucks spent on things my family can't use. Has anyone tried everything and then found a solution? I can't return them because I had them engraved when I purchased them on Apple.com. Nice, huh?

I no longer can see. I have been sitting here & have read every message on this post, all 9,999,999,999,999 posts. I have the same problem with itunes not reading my ipod, although my computer IS reading my ipod. I have tried EVERY "resolution" and "hey, this worked for me, try this" form of help...but to no avail, nothing helps. Nothing works. My ipod was a free gift thru work & has company logo on it, so I cant take mine back. This is the biggest piece of s* I have ever wasted an entire day (yes 24 hrs) on. Another person earlier said it best...."thanks crApple!!!!" No wonder I've never bought an Apple product before.....and never will.

Ahh.. I went to update my ipod ( i have a 30GB video ), a message came up and said my ipod was corrupted, and needed to be restored, and I did that, but then during the middle of restoring it another message came up and said an unknown error had occurred. and then my computer and itunes couldn't recognise my ipod, and a sad ipod icon appeared. so I reset it, like it says in the support, and then after i did that it froze on the apple icon. and it wont turn off! I've even tried letting the batteries run out. No luck. If anyone can help me with this, pleeeasseee do. I'd really appreciate it. 🙂
