Macbook pro gets overheated despite having applied thermal paste just 1 month ago

I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2012, 10 gb ram, 500 gb hd and 128 gb SSD.

1. For the last 25 days, since putting SSD and re-installing OS and all apps, the Mac has been shutting down almost daily. It either shuts down and restarts itself - or hangs interminably, forcing an external restart.

2. Suspecting that the problem may be overheating, I stared monitoring temprature using Istats. I discovered that the temperature would shoot to 90-100 degrees centigrade, even when the outside temp was cool. Activity monitor shows that nothing, CPU or anything else, is having an overload.

3. Started using constantly with cooling pad, and that decreased frequency from 2-3 times a day to once a day or once in two days.

4. In the last week, the problem became worse. Initially by increasing the internal fan to full speed using Istats control, I could get the temp under control (to the normal of 50-60 degrees). But after 2-3 days even with full fan, the temp kept spiking up and refused to cool down, requiring restart.

5. I started working in AC constantly and still the temp refused to stay down.

Additional problems: These are probably unrelated problems, but am mentioning it in case they are connected.

1. Safari would stop connecting to the net at least once a day - even when I could access the same sites with other browsers. After some time, the problem goes away on its own - only to come again the next day.

2. I keep a time machine (TM) backup and a non-TM backup. For non-TM backup, I tried sync folder pro, but it started deleting my files and creating huge delsync folders, so I shifted to folder sync. But for 410 GB syncing, it took 3 days and still couldn't complete because either the app would crash or the Mac would hang or shutdown. Also it was syncing files that I hadn't touched for years - don't know why.

3. Spotlight search finds some applications and doesn't find others eg it finds firefox, but not opera or chrome. I have to go to apps folder to find and open those apps - now I have started keeping them in the dock.

4. Smart folder search doesn't detect some files, even when they are present. Doing re-indexing didn't solve the issue.

5. I shifted to Mac 2 years ago and I have had so many issues - slow, shutting down etc - that I have had to do clean install 7 times till now. And after each install, it works well for a month or two and again gives problems.

6. I am a writer and my machine is usually on for 18 hrs daily. I shifted from windows to Mac believing that it would be stabler system, but I have had to spend more time on the machine in 2 years than what I had spent on windows in the last 10-15 years. It's been an overall unsatisfactory experience - and that's putting it mildly.

Thank you for your help.

When running hot run this and post the results here so we know more about your configuration.

Any suggestions for some reliable app for non-TM backup?

Carbon Copy Cloner is an excellent software to use for backing up your MBP. It is not free but worth the money. What it will do is make a copy of your entire HDD and create a boot drive. Should you HDD fail, you can immediately connect it to your MBP (or swap in the HDD) and be back operating in a few minutes as opposed to waiting hours for a transfer of data. It will make incremental backups whenever you want them. CCC and Time Machine are the backup strategy that I use.

If your MBP crashed due to a kernel panic, log and post it using these directions:

I got Carbon Copy Cloner - the only thing is that it requires Mac OS Journaled format, whereas all my data on my backup disk is in NTFS format. So I guess I will need to backup that on to some other disk, then convert the backup disk to Journaled format and then try CCC out. Disk Utility Partition is not allowing me to partition it partly in NTFS and partially in Journaled format.

For accessing this data on windows, I guess I will need to use Macdrivers - or is there any alternative?

I found the log in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. There are a number of reports that can be opened with the console.

The data in the file thus opened is huge - still, tried to paste it here as that's what was told Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic - Apple Support

But I got the message that the data couldn't be posted, so posting some of it here and including a dropbox link for the full report.

I was not advocating CCC to be used for NTFS formatted HDDs, just the MBP internal HDD. That is a new element that you have introduced. Search for third party applications that can copy NTFS formatted HDDs on an entire and incremental basis. I do not deal with Windows applications.

You cannot install a NTFS partition on a Mac.

What you have download is not a kernel panic log. Please review the kernel panic log instructions again. Console logs are not an area of my strength.

>>> Sorry, despite re-reading it, I am still not clear what is to be done. It says here: Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic - Apple Supporthttps://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753http://

"Mac OS X v10.5 and later
If a kernel panic occurs, information is added to a log file in the folder /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports (Mac OS X v10.6), or /Library/Logs/PanicReporter (Mac OS X v10.5).

The name of each log file in this location includes the date and time when the kernel panic was logged."

What am I to do with log file? I have uploaded it here:

Today the MBP after working well for three days (during which period i didn't turn on Safari) became heated to around 90 while I was using text2speechPro to convert text to mp3. I increased the internal exhaust to maximum and turned on my cooling pad - and the MBP cooled down without crashing or freezing.

You may trash the console log. Perhaps you simply do not have a kernel panic report in that file.

What you have posted is acceptable but I would like to see slightly lower temperatures and perhaps lower fan speeds as well.

I notice that you have a lot of applications open. Close every thing down but Firefox and Activity Monitor. Disable your fan control. Post screen shots of Activity Monitor and the temperature application.

Ciao.

Since yesterday night, coreduetd is taking 97-100% CPU. What is this process? Why does it take so much CPU?

At morning 6 am, the comp temp started shooting above 80. I closed down all apps as you suggested, still the temp didn't decrease. Even after turning the exhaust full, the temp is still hovering around 75. Here are the screenshots:

Thanks a lot, Illass.

For the whole day, today, the temperature didn't go beyond 75, even when I didn't use the cooling pad and kept fan speed at default. For the last six hours, I have started working with Safari too - and things are still fine.

I am keeping my fingers crossed, though - for at least a few days.

Do you know if the corduetd might have caused the overheating?
