iPhone music app freezing, throwing me out, misbehaving

This is on an iPhone 6 with the latest iOS 8.4.1 as of today, running the music app with an account for the family. As I'm browsing and listening to music, the app threw me out after an hour or so complaining about an authentication failure, unable to log me in. Quitting and restarting the app didn't work. Getting to the iTunes and app store section was impossible as the settings app would freeze when I pressed this menu item. Rebooting the phone got it working.

I am seeing the app misbehaving at irregular intervals, with the screen just going blank with no music list or albums, but it doesn't stop playing what's already on.

At other times, selecting a song doesn't play it. The app appears to "think" about it for a while and simply gives up. Retrying 4-5 times gets it playing.

There's really no problem with my WiFi or net connection and I'm on a 200Mbps fibre line here. Just to test, spotify worked just fine with no glitches.

Are there any tips & tricks you have used to resolve these problems?

I have similar problems on my iPad air 2 .. it´s a 4g capable 128gb unit, and after 5 or so songs relayed via airplay the app stops responding. It hoggs resources like mad, notes app is lagging for example when this happens.

Takes up to 1 minute to recover from this, only sollution so far has been to reboot the ipad to be able to play another 5 or so songs.. Doubletapping home and ending the app does not fix it.

Also if I try to access music tab under settings, after freeze - and before reboot, the same thing happens. Settings app freezes, and music tab is unaccessible.

Streaming via Wi-Fi, or offline songs.. doesn´t matter.

Holy crap this last update has made a mess of this app.

THIS IS A RED FLAG BUG.... Should have been a showstopper in beta already 😟 😟 😟

Well, that is not case (if I remember correctly) with iTunes and Apple Match usage. I have plenty of paid music and it never worked like that before, so there should be a way to by pass it here as well as I own so many Apple devices and want to access my content around the house without this type of issue. I think this might be one of the source issues behind this whole thread. Would Family plan resolve this?

It seems that recommended way is to stay away apple music and continue iTunes usage without it and then have streaming service separately. This cannot be what Apple visioned.

This is really getting worse. I just switched off apple music on my iPhone 6 and hard restarted my device. Then the Apple Music worked. I played something on my iPad and iPhone stopped working. It seems Apple Music has been designed for users with only 1 Apple Device and going back and forth between devices messes everything up. I have personally 7 apple devices, so this is really horrible. Also I noticed that after latest iTunes for PC upgrade, the software does not open up anymore on my high power work PC.

I was having same issue around 10 days before, but after doing following action, I coud have safe mind around 48 hours so far.

Action: log out from Apple music, then log in again via apple music app

Please note that even log-out could not be done when we face the issue. try it right after reboot the device when everything is going well.

In my case, iCloud music library can be activated. (does not matter for problem)

I hope it can help some of you who is wasting the time to reboot the device again and again!

I think you are right. Mine yesterday freezing while iCloud music library were off. So with iCloud music library off is not the solution.

I dont think there is anything we consumer can do and I dont want to spend my time to find out anymore. The problem is iOS 8.4.1 it self. Restart iPhone then resigning when problems comes and wait for a new update. And I am not using iOS 9 before final release on my primary device. Thats the solution.....

I Agree with you 100%! Ever since upgrading to 8.4 .1

- beats1radio doesn't load

- I will click on something to listen to in apple music and it showes it is playing but no sound

- it has been killing my battery

- When apple music does decide to work my phone gets extremely hot

- I also noticed since the update my iCloud freezes

anyone else having similar issues?

problems here are:

- Music app crashes.

- Settings crashes, specialy if i go to Settings/Music.

- for some mysterious reason, the Music app seems to keep streaming music (or downloading it, i am not sure) when it's not in use. as a result, my free RAM keeps being eaten up. to stop that, several thing work - log off Music, soft resetting the iPhone, or even just switching the iPhone off and on again - but the problem is recurrent. it comes back after some hours or some days.

- battery being eaten up badly.

- iPhone gets hot.

addendum: these problems did not start with 8.4.1. they started when i signed up to iTunes Match.

And the reason why Apple gives a 3 months free trial is because Apple Music is not ready.

Now I sign out Apple Music and I am sure then the iPhone gets normal again. And will not use Apple Music before Apple make it good.

It so disappointing. This Apple Music is not Apple. The design and functions are all so ******.

Steve Jobs where are you.........????

Honestly, I am not sure if this is issue is related directly to Apple Music, or rather to iCloud in general. Apple Music is affected, for sure; but other parts of iOS are as well, like if you tap "Music" or "iCloud" in the settings app, this will make the app stall for some, sometimes. Restarting the device seem to help for a little while, but then it will happen again after a while. To me it seems as if this has to do with iCloud in conjunction iOS 8.4.1.

sounds reasonable.

my problems started when i signed up to Match, and when everything is ok, usually adding CDs from my collection to Match (iCloud) brings the problems back again.

maybe this sounds silly but i am trying to avoid the problems with these measures:

- turn off Automatic Transfers on Setting/iTunes Store and App Store

- import CDs

- after the import, wait for iCloud music library to sync/match the songs

- delete transfers (i.e. let all the songs in the cloud only)

- turn on Automatic Transfer so Music app can "see" the new CDs.

don't know if this will prevent the most recurring problems: RAM being eaten up until no more RAM, iPhone getting hot. Music and/or iTunes Store and App Store panes freezing on Settings, Music App freezing when i try to log out.

I replied on page three I believe this has something to do with Match and iCloud.

I standby that still.

I disabled Match and iCloud on my iPhone, then disabled Match on my MB that has all the music.

I reenabled it and waited a few hours for the MB to sync back up before enabling Match on the iPhone.

I am still dealing with the iPhone cycling in and out of LTE, 3G and 1x but the rest of the phone has functioned without rebooting and without freezing.

Certainly something is whacked with the module that controls the RF radio though.

Hmmm. After a reset last night, both my devices soon returned to their 'faulty' state. I didn't bother restarting either of them again, but have just noticed this morning that Apple Music and App Store are working fine. Previously I would always have to restart to get functionality back.

Not saying it's fixed (for me) yet, but it's certainly the most promising it's looked since this whole issue began.

But I am hard rock sure. Try it yourself for 3 days. Sign Out of Apple Music and all freezing and misbehaviours stops. Then you of cause can't use Apple music streaming and radio. Just your own synced music.
