iPhone music app freezing, throwing me out, misbehaving

This is on an iPhone 6 with the latest iOS 8.4.1 as of today, running the music app with an account for the family. As I'm browsing and listening to music, the app threw me out after an hour or so complaining about an authentication failure, unable to log me in. Quitting and restarting the app didn't work. Getting to the iTunes and app store section was impossible as the settings app would freeze when I pressed this menu item. Rebooting the phone got it working.

I am seeing the app misbehaving at irregular intervals, with the screen just going blank with no music list or albums, but it doesn't stop playing what's already on.

At other times, selecting a song doesn't play it. The app appears to "think" about it for a while and simply gives up. Retrying 4-5 times gets it playing.

There's really no problem with my WiFi or net connection and I'm on a 200Mbps fibre line here. Just to test, spotify worked just fine with no glitches.

Are there any tips & tricks you have used to resolve these problems?

I have similar problems on my iPad air 2 .. it´s a 4g capable 128gb unit, and after 5 or so songs relayed via airplay the app stops responding. It hoggs resources like mad, notes app is lagging for example when this happens.

Takes up to 1 minute to recover from this, only sollution so far has been to reboot the ipad to be able to play another 5 or so songs.. Doubletapping home and ending the app does not fix it.

Also if I try to access music tab under settings, after freeze - and before reboot, the same thing happens. Settings app freezes, and music tab is unaccessible.

Streaming via Wi-Fi, or offline songs.. doesn´t matter.

Holy crap this last update has made a mess of this app.

THIS IS A RED FLAG BUG.... Should have been a showstopper in beta already 😟 😟 😟

I agree with you. I have had the same issues.

Spent many hours on the phone with Apple Support. I have tried the Erase Settings tip, even did a Restore as new and put my backup back on the phone.

It works for a while or so then craps out, often the next day.

I have spent far too much time on this problem and nothing seems to fix it. It doesn't really matter how much you tinker with the settings or hold your tongue while signing in & out of your Apple ID.

I will have to wait until the 9.0 update...but I am considering trying the Beta. It can't be any more buggy than this.

People who are seeing an adoption to public beta as an option: even though you can go back, take care. Beta versions hold constant connections with Apple servers what may decrease battery life. In so far as I've seen from the web, this last beta is not causing significant battery drain, but it's worth noting it's a beta version. Furthermore, any eventual modification happening to your files is your responsability... even though an option, it's risky. Be aware of that.

Yes both, got a family plan as well as using my ID from my iPhone 5s, AppleTV and iTunes (PC). everything became a mess when updating to iOS 8.4.1. Apple Music asks me to sign up, not able to view iCloud settings, web pages with ref to downable apps will not show, updatates will not download, rebooting the phone will make it work for a random time, but not hours.

I posted here a long time ago, and I now actually have both my Air 2 and 6 plus back to working order. I don't know if it may work for your guys though.

Preparation: I import and export my contact to google. I direct my iCloud email to google one. I copy my note to evernote/microsoft.

Log out your Setting/iCloud, but keep the setting/iTunes & App Store logged in.

Power+Home Reset

Result: You can install your app, play Music, Add google back to get contacts, continue using whatsapp/whatever communication apps.

Only missing iCloud drive, iCloud Photo Library (I use lightroom, so no problems), and Find my iPhone.

Zero weird freezing, Music logging itself out, Setting crashing from that point.

I am trying to turn off iCloud music library then sign out and sign in and make sure that iCloud music library is off on all my devices and see how it goes.

I think iCloud music library is the bad guy.

This morning I did a factory reset via iTunes and set up the iPhone 6 as a brand new device. First thing I did after installation: Went to settings app > Music and turned on iCloud music library. Guess what: Settings app immediately froze, so I had to quit and restart the phone to get it working again.

So to me this is clearly a big fat bug in iCloud music library, maybe only in conjunction with iOS 8.4.1!

Now after an hour or so of testing, I find that - even with iCloud music library and Apple Music both deactivated - I still can easily freeze the Settings app by touching the 'Music' entry. After re-starting the device, it's working for a while, but then after a while it happens again. Same happened to me when I tried to access the 'iCloud' or 'iTunes & App Store' parts within Settings app. And same goes for other glitches like non-working links from Mail app, apps from App store not installing and such. And yes, it happens on both of my iOS 8.4.1 devices, iPhone 6 and iPad Air.

Never before I've experienced such serious misbehaving after an iOS update. And I can assure that not a single one of these issues has ever happened before iOS 8.4.1

Finally I am considering installing iOS 9 Beta, as there is no such thing like a downgrade option. 😕

Hi guys,

while Apple Music worked great on my iMacs (home and office) I was experiencing the same issues (app freezing, not synchronizing, logout...) on my mobile devices (iPhone 4s and iPad Mini 2).

I had missed the obvious: on my iPad iCloud Music Library was on, while on my iPhone it was off.

I turned it on on the phone too, rebooted it and are now everything is flowing very good...
