QuickTime 7.7.8 no longer installs on Windows 10

Why am I no longer able to install QuickTime v7.7.8 on Windows 10? I get a message that it can only be run on Windows Vista or 7. The last version that was able to be installed was v7.7.7. Why did the install get blocked as of v7.7.8? Why is Apple Software Update still only offering QuickTime v7.7.6 under New Software even though it is no longer the latest version?

Apple is deprecating QuickTime for Microsoft Windows. They will no longer be issuing security updates for the product on the Windows Platform and recommend users uninstall it. Note that this does not apply to QuickTime on Mac OSX.

You can use Tommynation alternate 2 to install. http://tommynation.com/install-quicktime-windows-10/

Download 7.7.8 from Apple site. Unzip the APPLE install file or if you don't have or want one of the unzip programs that can do the exe files, you can run the apple install until you see the message about about not Windows Vista or Windows 7. At that point the files have been all unzipped to a temp directory in your temp directory. Copy these files to a new directory C:\QT and then click Ok on the install window.

Download Tommy's transform file http://tommynation.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/FIX.zip and copy the mst file in it to your c:\QT directory.

Open Command prompt as admin. cd \QT then Run the Msinstaller as follows.

msiexec /i QuickTime.msi /qn TRANSFORMS=FIX.mst ALLUSERS=1 /log C:\QT\install.log

Install is now complete for Quicktime itself. To make sure all the pieces install you could click the other MSi files but I suggest actually running the Apple install again and tell it to repair the install.

Here is how to make this work

Download the offline package from here QuickTime 7.7.8 for Windows

Use WinRAR to extract the file

Download & install a MSI Editor. I recommend http://www.instedit.com/

Install it & open the file QuickTime.msi

on the right side, under tables select LaunchCondition & delete these 2 rows,

(VersionNT>501) AND (VersionNT<=603)

BUSEROSVERSION AND (BUSEROSVERSION<10)

save it & run now in compatibility mode. it will install

It failed to me anyway, 2229 appears all the time.

BUT - looks I found a solution!!!

I assume the most people having problems here even if the follow all those nice hints here do have a non US / english installation.

So it was mine - with german windows 10.

The way how it works - change in the windows settings the language and region and format etc. to USA / English!

Reboot - install Quicktime as mentioned above - and change back to german etc.....

worked for me!

Found the hint here:

Might be a little late to the party on this one, but if people are still having trouble I found a solution that worked for me. By installing a program that requires an installation of quicktime built in, I was able to get it onto Windows 10 without any custom installers or weird command prompt runarounds. For me I downloaded and installed Davinci Resolve 12 (free) and it self-directed a "necessary installation of quicktime". Honestly all I did was install Davinci as suggested and now I have Quicktime. Maybe it'll work for others too. Worth a try with free and awesome software. link to the site:

Hope it helps someone. Peace.

I have been reading the posts because I just purchased new machine with Windows 10 and had same problem - not being able to download Q/T on my new machine with Windows 10. I just up on Apple site and noticed there is a version 7.7.9 now. So I took a chance and downloaded it on to my Windows 10 machine. Download was perfect and running perfect. I don't know if I was just lucky or if Apple fixed something. I am not a computer geek so maybe just got lucky.

Based on Apple's website the installer for QuickTime 7.7.8 is for Windows - Vista or Windows 7 only. So Apple right now doesn't have a QuickTime installer for Windows 10. I upgraded a Windows 7 computer to Windows 10 without reformatting the hard drive. Because Microsoft sent me Windows 10 online. The Windows 7 computer already had QuickTime 7.7.7 installed when I upgraded to Windows 10, and QT is working fine, so it's compatible with Windows 10.

I don't know if Apple will have a installer for Windows 10, where browsers seem to be doing away with plug-ins or so they say. I've seen online where some websites are showing a QT installer for Windows 10. That would be risky getting a QT installer not from Apple, you don't know what's included in the installer.
