QuickTime 7.7.8 no longer installs on Windows 10

Why am I no longer able to install QuickTime v7.7.8 on Windows 10? I get a message that it can only be run on Windows Vista or 7. The last version that was able to be installed was v7.7.7. Why did the install get blocked as of v7.7.8? Why is Apple Software Update still only offering QuickTime v7.7.6 under New Software even though it is no longer the latest version?

Apple is deprecating QuickTime for Microsoft Windows. They will no longer be issuing security updates for the product on the Windows Platform and recommend users uninstall it. Note that this does not apply to QuickTime on Mac OSX.

See http://blog.trendmicro.com/urgent-call-action-uninstall-quicktime-windows-today/ for details.

This seemed simple, used safe downloads and applications (if you believe Norton), and the result apparently installed fine.

- You can use 7Zip instead of WinRAR to extract the msi

- I didn't have to use any compatibility modes to run the fixed msi on Windows 10 and do the install.

All in all, pretty inexcusable for Apple to let this problem hang around -- and to advertise on the Quicktime download site that the one they are offering is only for Windows 7 and Vista. Vista?? Anyway, it shows they are very aware.

Btw, thank you kindly, Yoda_Phone.

I have the same problem, not being able to upgrade to version 7.7.8 from 7.7.7.

I cannot uninstall version 7.7.7 as well. I get this error message

User uploaded file

The text is in Danish and says something like this: An unexpected error has occured during installation of this package. It can indicate, that there is a problem with this package. The error code is 2229.

I'm using Windows 10, which has been upgraded from 7 -> 8 -> 8.1 -> 10

Same issue here - I use Patch My PC Updater software and it keeps warning me that my Quicktime is not current (7.77 installed, 7.78 available). But like you when I go to the Quicktime update page & download the update, I then get a message that the 7.78 is only for Windows 7 / Vista users. Perplexed and hoping someone from Apple clues us Windows 10 users in soon .....

Both 7.7.7 and 7.7.8 were security fixes.

NO DO NOT JUST USE 7.7.6. Install 7.7.8. Not sure what problems people are having using the bypass previous posted. I had no trouble in getting installed with the small install modify file listed. Once its installed, you can even use the regular install to "repair" it if you think some files are not "vanilla" apple.

Apple Needs to fix the install file.

Mileage is going to vary folks. I followed the steps for both option 1 and option 2 and they failed. Despite the exploit in the other install package, I went ahead and installed it, and it worked. Normally I wouldn't do this except I am building a project in Unity, and QuickTime is a necessary component for the build. Hopefully Apple fixes their installer soon. I would hate to think that Apple is doing this deliberately. If they are, they are opening themselves up to so much liability for a class action suit. Fix the problem Apple.

hallo, nucleardirk. But unfortunately, it' snot only non-US locations which have this difficulty.

in fact, that may be a separate or additional problem.

jcdueck, I also agree that installing via another program is unlikely to give the version of iTunes which has the latest security fixes we are all interested in.

i still think Yoda_Phone's solution, just above, is the safest method so far, and it worked easily here.

You might also need to do as nuclear dirk suggests if 'overseas' or over border (I am listening to pleasant Mexican morning music here).

Just to say, this new download version from Apple installed fine here also, and gave me the same 7.7.8 up-to-date version of QuickTime as the one carved up by simplest method per Yoda_Phone.

Nice they have done this.

But not yet changed the website to include Windows 8, 8.1, or 10, last of which I am using.

I think I've stopped my web browsers from accessing it; needed just for some multimedia development tools that borrow its function, and those are important.
