QuickTime 7.7.8 no longer installs on Windows 10

Why am I no longer able to install QuickTime v7.7.8 on Windows 10? I get a message that it can only be run on Windows Vista or 7. The last version that was able to be installed was v7.7.7. Why did the install get blocked as of v7.7.8? Why is Apple Software Update still only offering QuickTime v7.7.6 under New Software even though it is no longer the latest version?

Apple is deprecating QuickTime for Microsoft Windows. They will no longer be issuing security updates for the product on the Windows Platform and recommend users uninstall it. Note that this does not apply to QuickTime on Mac OSX.

See http://blog.trendmicro.com/urgent-call-action-uninstall-quicktime-windows-today/ for details.

RIP QuickTime for Windows. Apple is "deprecating support" for the application, and will no longer patch security flaws in the software.

In this regard, QuickTime for Windows now joins Microsoft Windows XP and Oracle Java 6 as software that is no longer being updated to fix vulnerabilities, and subject to ever-increasing risk as more and more unpatched vulnerabilities are found affecting it.

So, Windows users should uninstall Quicktime. How to do so is detailed here:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205771

Mac OS users should not do so as the security risks that have prompted this do not affect the Apple OS.
