BEFORE REPLACING TOP-CASE CHECK TRACKPAD FLEX CABLE!!!

I had the same problem; first intermittently, then permanently. Apple service didn't find anything using diagnostics when I'd brought it in with intermittent problems. A later visit and a solution was found:

It turned out it was the TRACKPAD FLEX CABLE. A very inexpensive repair compared with replacing the entire top-case! Shame on Apple for fusing the top case, keyboard, trackpad, and batteries into one unrepairable component!

Apparently the trackpad and keyboard cables run together in a cable that bends around the close end of the trackpad under the little cutout for opening the lid. The tech speculated that my cable was pinched or bent too much from my pulling the laptop out of my bag with one hand! Thankfully this is a replaceable part!

Of course, I recommend to anyone else with the problem to exhaust at-home solutions for possible software faults first: resets, reinstalling OS, etc.

Good luck!

Here's what happened to me just this year 2016:

i brought my macbook pro to a service centre. the problem is keyboard and trackpad not responding, asking for a bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

they replace it (luckily still under warranty) during the last week of august 2016

after 2 months: same problem (this time the warranty expired)

i talked to the manager: "i will not pay a single cent for a product that works only for 2 months.

1st week of october: manager gave me a service centre warranty and did not pay a cent for another replacement.

i wrote to apple about the incident and also tried to shoot and email to mr. Tim Cook.

It happened to me since 2015, and I have tried all ways as lllass's suggestions,

including reseting SMC and NVRAM/PRAM, starting in Safe Mode, doing Recovery, and reinstalling fresh OS X.

But it's not working.

Finally, I took it to a service centre, the guy told me I need to replace both the TOP case and IO board to fix the problem.

I paid a lot to fix it for this problem. (It's a hard decision for me due to the expired warranty)

After getting it back from the service centre, the problem seems resolved and the built-in keyboard and trackpad working again.

However, only after 2 months, the problem happens again now,

and I decide to take it back to the service centre tomorrow (sign...)

Had the same problem with my MBP 13" retina 2015. Tried all DIY (except hardware tinkering) before bringing to the service center. The service center recommended a full 3-5 days extensive diagnostic tests after their initial 30min assessment haven't solved the problem. I just got it back yesterday. They said after resetting the hardware internally, the problem disappeared didn't occur again. Just this morning, my MBP locked-up. My bluetooth mouse and keyboard are nearby. I immediately turned them off after rebooting using bluetooth mouse. It came back on again (I mean, the built-in keyboard and track pad). I am using it now. I thought I just want to share the scenario.

Question: would it be at some point probably starting with El Capitan, there's a somewhat AI-like software mechanism that automatically disables the built-in keyboard and track pad when MBP is near Apple's bluetooth keyboard and mouse? And toggle its permanent use configuration when bluetooth mouse and keyboard are used frequently?

Hmm.. so there's a setting that disables the built-in mouse and track pad when external keyboard and mouse is present!

See, https://www.tekrevue.com/tip/disable-macbook-trackpad/

I am use I tried rebooting / shutting down (prolonged press of on/off key) several times my MBP at home (far away from my bluetooth mouse and keyboard which I use in the office with external Monitor). So, does the MBP retina now set this config automatically (without intervention)? Could someone brave enough (or have more than 1 MBP) play with scenario for days? 😀

Bump.

Exactly the same with me. Completely unresponsive, 2015 model. Genius Bar advised it was a software problem and to restore the disc and reinstall OS X. Done this, still unresponsive. Genius bar adamant that it isn't a hardware fault - I don't see how it could be anything other than one. In any case, turned away, and now on research trip with a defunct machine.

Entirely disappointed. Any advice would be welcome.

I just encountered this issue. First in 9 years of Apple user life!! I'm totally stuck on the login interface. I tried PRAM reset but nothing is working. My trackpad still respond but I can't type anything.

Tried connecting to an external keyboard but nothing responded either.

Is there anything else I can try?

Very frustrated as the computer was working fine then it went a bit slow so i did a restart and since then never get to see my desktop!

Mine is a MBP 13in Retina early 2015. Mine accepts external keyboard and mouse (both Bluetooth and Wireless). 2 weeks ago, I decided to have it serviced after 2 days of trying to revive its built-in keyboard and trackpad. The service center returned it to me back to working condition after "internal" hardware reset (I suspect, unplugging / plugging in the embedded battery).

Anyway, after several days, it locked again but the built-in keyboard and trackpad came back after 2 days of no power (shutdown state)! I suspect the Magic Mouse 2 and the latest Bluetooth keyboard seems to trigger the locking mechanism. I am staying away from them for now.

And today, it locked again! I am not using the BT mouse and keyboard! Really frustrating! But it seems upon turning it ON, I move my fingers on the trackpad and punching keys while booting seems to work!

I just hope any of the above experiences will be of help to you. I still don't know what causing it since my internal battery seems to be in good condition according to the tech guy in service center.
