BEFORE REPLACING TOP-CASE CHECK TRACKPAD FLEX CABLE!!!

I had the same problem; first intermittently, then permanently. Apple service didn't find anything using diagnostics when I'd brought it in with intermittent problems. A later visit and a solution was found:

It turned out it was the TRACKPAD FLEX CABLE. A very inexpensive repair compared with replacing the entire top-case! Shame on Apple for fusing the top case, keyboard, trackpad, and batteries into one unrepairable component!

Apparently the trackpad and keyboard cables run together in a cable that bends around the close end of the trackpad under the little cutout for opening the lid. The tech speculated that my cable was pinched or bent too much from my pulling the laptop out of my bag with one hand! Thankfully this is a replaceable part!

Of course, I recommend to anyone else with the problem to exhaust at-home solutions for possible software faults first: resets, reinstalling OS, etc.

Good luck!

Hey Guys!

As mentioned in my previous posts that my keyboard and trackpad became unresponsive again after the Service Center make it working again. I remember that what they did was a "hardware reset" which I suspect it means, unplugging the battery and putting it back. So that was the one I did today...

I opened up my MBP 13in (early 2015) and unplugged the battery for five minutes and put it back.

You need two type of screw driver.. the one the opens the MBP cover and another for the battery connected fastener. Anyway, let me know if you are interested to do it yourself (not advisable unless you are like me, impatient for a 3 days Service Center turn around).

As for the cause of the unresponsive keyboard and trackpad? Short answer, I still don't know. My suspicion, using external monitor and mouse and keyboard (bluetooth / wireless) somehow triggers the lockdown. So, I will try not to use it until next year and see if it will last that long.

I feel like buying a new laptop. I love using a Mac because techy people like me can do more with it without installing any 3rd party softwares. But with this experience, I am looking at my options... Lenovo or Panasonic Toughbook...

MBP retina early 2015: had the same problem for a while. The genius bar could not help and suggested new keyboard and trackpad. However, I noticed whenever I opened the macbook's back and closed it again keyboard and trackpad would work for a while. It looks like the back cover puts pressure on the keyboard/trackpad connection and somehow interferes with the connection. I put a few layers of tape (1cm long) next to the connection on the battery to make the back cover sit on the tape rather than the keyboard/trackpad connection. This seems to eliminate the problem.
