I can not use the edit features. After I click on edit they turn grey. iPhoto was working yesterday

Ok, I finished the import and was able to edit.

That means the problem lies with your original library. Now is the time to try to repair it.

When I follow the steps to repair it, it repairs the new library. So, dumb question ... how do I get back to the original library?

What is the best way to transfer a large amount of pictures into new library?

From where are you transferring? If these image files are in folders somewhere and since iPhoto crates a new Event from each folder of photos being imported you can just drag several folders at a time onto the iPhoto icon in the Dock or into the open iPhoto library window and you will get a new event from each folder imported. The Event name will be that of the folder.
