No, I don't own the truth. And I have said previously that when a tear down is done we will learn more. I just go by logic and knowledge of hardware and history of electronics. I also have experience with software. I don't abide unsupported statements and information or conspiracy theories based on nothing.

LOL, you'll pardon me if I don't take advice from someone who thinks GM stands for "Grand Master".

The fact is that slow motion requires hardware because it requires a faster framerate that the shutter actually has to have the capability to keep up with. However, opening a shutter 1.5 seconds before and recording video, then taking a photo, then opening a shutter for 1.5 seconds after and then putting all that together into one file is well within the abilities of the existing hardware and is strictly a software based capability that will likely be added at a later date. Obviously they can't do it now or it would take some shine off the S'.

P.S. GM stands for "Golden Master" or "Gold Master"

LOL, don't blame you but my dictionary doesn't like "Gold Master". But now that iOS 9 has been released and available to the public it is easy to determine that Live Photos are on the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus.

But thanks for the correction. And I think you will find that Live Photos is a firmware based feature in the camera. It would seem odd that Apple has not added this feature in the released iOS 9 nor the 9.1 (per reports) but assuming they will add it in a later version. I don't recall them ever doing so.

except the current hardware can't record video using the full 8 MP sensor, which would be needed to match the quality of the photo.

If you read through what you linked that is software and APIs to play, access and export Live Photos and giving 3rd party apps the ability to access Live Photos which have been taken. There is nothing in their regarding taking them. 9.1 is already being beta tested, if you believe it is going to give you the ability to take them you are going to be disappointed.

I don't buy that.... they left picture messaging out of the first iphones when even WAY older phones supported it.. and when they finally added it to newer models they claimed it wasn't available on older models because it was due to hardware limitations, suffice to say that ended up being false thanks to the JB community.. Apple was basically stating their new better iphone 1 was inferior to older phones who could already do it which is an outrageous claim to make.. and it was proven false.. tweaks to enable it worked just fine.. it was just a setting in a file...

This has happened time and time again... there is already a tweak to enable live photos on older phones... I've not tested tweaks personally because I prefer the security of my device, but they exist for sure.. I have seen them in action.

Apple tends to disable features to encourage upgrading to the latest model.. I seem to remember a tweak that also enabled Siri on older devices..

But if you want an OFFICIAL answer.... no you can't use live photos on your slightly older device 🙂 you need to pay money for it .. that will always be the way...

Of course the older iphones are capable of this... Apple made a similar claim that the iPhone 1 couldn't do MMS messaging but when the jailbreak community came in they enabled it ... it was just a setting hidden in a plist file on the device... they said the hardware of the iphone 1 couldn't handle MMS messaging which is absolutely insane to claim... much older phones had been using it for years.. it later turned out that Jobs just didn't like MMS and it also was a great tactic to force upgrades on people... they do this every release of iOS ... sorry you can't have these features because your hardware can't handle it.. and time and time again it turns out to be a simple software setting on the OS that enables it and it works fine..

A smarter person than I might consider a class action situation.. when Apple makes a claim as bold as "the hardware doesn't support it" and it turns out it does... that's a bold faced lie to the consumer.. and jail breaking is entirely legal even if it does void your warranty ( if they ever knew ) ... that's the ONE thing I hate about Apple... they are dishonest when it comes to those sorts of things to keep people in the bi-annual upgrade cycle ..
