"Remove from Recents" missing from iOS 9 mail

H there,

If I enter an email address which is not in my address book into mail and wish once used to delete it , in iOS 8 i clicked the ℹ icon to the right of the list of emails which popped up as the partly typed the email address. Then selected "Remove from Recents' which was at the bottom of the list in red.

In iOS 9 its gone !

Anyone any ideas please how I now delete unwanted email addresses once used which are not saved to the address book.

A big thanks to anyone who posts the answer.

Hi - has anyone had success with the method suggested by Jimmy? I tried it out but could not get it to work.

I do not backup addresses to iCloud nor do I use Mail from a Mac. Does anyone have any fixes for a person in my situation? I do have a spare iphone and can restore the iOS on that to pre-iOS 9 version and then delete the email address cache the "old way" but I believe that this will only clear the cache on the spare phone? Can someone please confirm this?

I have also read that one way to clear the address cache is to delete the mail account and then re-add it. In a scenario where you have multiple mail accounts setup on your phone, do you need to delete them all to clear the cache or just the one from which mails to the undesired addresses were originally sent?

Thanks in advance.

Here's my question ....

When did Apple start saving and syncing the "To:" address suggestions via iCloud, or other method, between my devices? I never saw that as a feature in the release notes, there seems to be no way to turn it off, and it seems to go against the statement where Apple isn't going through our email ... yet they seem to be collecting all of the "To" fields in our outgoing email.

Am I missing something here?

It doesn't matter if you use iCloud, either for contacts or email. I haven't synced my contacts - And I surely never saved all of the auto-suggested emails that popped up - but there they all there in the iCloud email application.

I just painstakingly went through and cleared out all of the auto-suggest addresses I could find. Of course, on iCloud you have to use two letters to start the auto-suggest instead of just on one on iOS so it took FOREVER but ... hoping that cleared them out of my iPhone and iPad. After a few minutes, and restarting the devices, it doesn't seem to have taken effect yet but hoping it will by morning, east coast time.

I can't believe such an essential (imo) feature was removed from iOS but at least there's a workaround. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

1) Create an iCloud email account if you don't already have one. Settings -> iCloud -> Toggle Mail on. You'll be asked to create an address if you don't have one.

2) Log in to iCloud.com on a desktop or laptop.

3) Click on Mail on the website.

4) Compose an email and start typing the name or email you want to delete. Move your mouse over the suggestion you want to remove and then click the red circle that appears. This deletes the suggestion.

5) Repeat for each autofill suggestion you don't want.

My iPhone immediately picked up the changes and stopped suggesting these people when I compose mail.
