Podcast app crashing in iOS 9

I just installed iOS 9 on my iPhone 6. When opening the podcast app I get a white screen, "Updating Library" and then it crashes after about 15 seconds. Anyone else experiencing this?

I've quit the app.

Restarted the phone.

Tried putting phone in airplane mode and opening the app.

Same result each time.

When 9.0.3 got installed it seemed that the app was going to run OK again. However, I can't hear more than 10 seconds from any podcast: it just stops playing and it's impossible to make it play the podcast again. Then it seems that the app crashes and reloads, cause the playing status of the current podcast disappears.

Thinking about switching to some other podcast app. Does anyone know of an app that syncs with iTunes subscriptions?

I updated to 9.0.2 (OTA, iPhone 5) and I'm free from crashes.

It's starting to sound like some people may have general system instability of some sort - for example, iOS didn't get updated correctly for some reason - and if erasing and starting from scratch solves the issue it definitely points to that as a problem. (Because you're using the same iOS version, just reinstalled.)

That's going to be harder for Apple to solve than specific Podcasts app crashes, but keep contributing your info.

Since updating to iOS 9, the Podcast app isn't stable on both my iPad Air and iPhone 5S. At first, it did the "Updating Library" thing, then would go back to the Home screen (I never even got into the app) After updating to iOS 9.1 on iPad, and now 9.0.2 on iPhone, it has improved, but not been solved. I can now see my Podcasts, and even play some in their entirety, but it crashes frequently (goes back to Home screen) on both devices. It always crashes when trying to download new Podcasts

And yes, I have done resets on both, even resetting back to factory settings on both devices. Same problems persist after all types of resets.

The only other information that might help, in the unlikely event that an Apple Engineer reads these things, is that I was almost out of memory on my iPhone before this happened (back in iOS 8), and started to get some error messages in a few apps related to my memory problem.

Please Apple, you can do better. Now I have to talk with much less bravado and swagger around my friends with Samsung Galaxys - at least they can play their podcasts.

Peder, Justslymo -- Your posts mentioned "reinstall" and "Clean install". Does that mean you re-stored from backup?

In my case, I think the old version of the app had some data or files that the new app didn't like, so it crashed. If this it correct, that would explain why a restore from backup doesn't fix anything -- because the bad data comes back exactly the same as before.

Zarknail -- I had to keep deleting podcasts until I got lucky and the crashing stopped. This required deleting half my podcasts, which was a bit annoying, but not terrible.

If I were to do it again, I would try this: connect my iphone to my computer, and under Podcasts, turn off "sync podcasts". This should delete all the podcasts from your phone. (And them maybe you delete manually the ones which are left) Then turn on syncing again, and have itunes copy all the shows back. It's possible this would copy over only good data, and the crashing would stop.

Of course, this only works if you've been syncing regularly, and your itunes has a list that mostly matches what's on your phone.

Good info.

For the record, I have podcast downloading turned off, which streams them instead. Saves space on my phone and I don't have to go back and delete later. I recommend that. (The difference in the hit to your data plan between downloading and streaming should be minimal, unless you re-listen to a lot of episodes or plan to listen where there's no service.)

Well I download my podcasts because I have spotty cell and wifi service where I work. Based on the amount of people in this thread that have the exact problem we must all have "broken phones." That was very helpful. I guess I'll have to try another fresh iOS install and try to get my data and apps back on my phone without bringing in any old podcast info. I did it once with tech support and it didn't work.

The fact is, 9.0.1 solved the problem for many people, a fresh OS solved the problem for many others, and deleting a "bad" podcast solved it for others still. Those three troubleshooting steps have probably solved crashing issues for 99% of those having them.

Having the same symptom does not equal having the same problem. If you cough and I cough, we can't assume we both have a cold.

If you have really and truly unsubscribed your podcasts and then erased your entire phone and only installed a clean system (no backup!), then launched the Podcasts app and still crashed, yes, you probably have an issue with the phone itself.
