I was trying to update iPhone 5S this morning, and although my phone had about 300Mb left, the setup downloaded just fine and during the install it got stuck on the white/grey screen. I restarted 5S and the setup was able to resume itself and it almost completed the process. I'm at the last step where it says "Update Completed. Your phone was updated successfully. There are just a few more steps to follow, and then you're done." stage - It's asking me to select a Wi-Fi network to begin and as soon as I select my home-wifi, it gets stuck again on the white/grey screen with "slide to upgrade" text. As of now I am stuck and have tried to restart the phone multiple times but it fails everytime. Any hints?

I finally go it to work as a new phone using harpreet0singh's method; however, it did download ios9 and I could not revert to 8.4 so I am not restoring back up at this point so that phone is useable. fyi I did do all this and restored with same issue - so I would suggest not restoring backups at this moment until apple figures out. good luck to all

If you have a passcode function turned on then you may want to try to do what I did:

I have iPhone 4s and upgraded from IOS 7 to IOS 9. I spent the whole night today restoring 4 times, until I figured out the problem. The problem appears to be with the passcode to unlock your phone. That is, if you have a passcode enabled then you get stuck at this screen. After doing the restore 3 times, I have figured this out and restored without setting the passcode at the initial setup stage. After I got everything running, I enabled the passcode and then my iPhone fell into an infinite loop between the screen "slide to upgrade" and enter passcode. So I ended up doing the 4th restore and kept the passcode disabled.

I got bored of waiting and called Apple support. They walked me through rebooting and restoring, stuff I had already tried and it didn't work.
They put me through to a senior advisor who told me she wouldn't end the call until my problem is resolved (bold statement!!!) after 10 minutes she said there's nothing more she can do at the mo and it's with the technicians looool.

It's a widespread problem, either set your phone up as a new iphone (that worked for me) and wait til they patch it until you restore your back-up, or just wait for the patch altogether!

Not good enough really! Hopefully it will get sorted soon.

I have an iPhone 5 and had the same problem of getting to the 'Slide to Upgrade'. I would reset my phone by powering off holding both the Power Button and the Home button. Then when it started back up, I would release the power button while holding down the home button. After numerous attempts of bypassing different options when asked to set up the phone, I did not set up a passcode. This finally allowed me to get past the 'Waiting to copy' in step 5 of 5 in the iTune sync process and the 'Slide to Upgrade' on my iPhone. When iTunes showed that it started copying the files, the screen on my phone would flash from the Apple symbol to my home screen and back to the Apple symbol. Then after my laptop showed that the sync was finished, I left my phone connected as it was still doing something because the status bar would show movement on the phone, go blank, and then showed movement again along the status bar. FINALLY my home screen popped up and all of my files had been restored.

Krystalline.,

Just restart your iPhone, and let it pick up where it left off! I had a similar problem on the last IOS8 update....and although I was very worried to brick my phone that way, I had to do it as there were no other solution UI could think off.

Then, the phone pick up where it was before...but this time completed its update and all was fine.

Fairly similar thing also happened on my Daughter's Mac Laptop while upgrading the OS system, I force restarted and it went the same way too, and did work fine in the end.

So, it is your choice, but other than that, I cant see how you will be able to get that phone to finish what it started. In the worse case scenario, you will have to restore it fully, either with a backup or the new IOS9 again to its default settings.

iTunes updates via computer (Mac if possible, not Windows if possible), seems to be the safer option, alt least for now on the initial IOS9 update.

Let me know how it went, and share your feedback for others to benefit form it if you have a minute to spare.

Good luck!
