after update phone says "slide to upgrade" but won't allow it
I had the same problem. In the end I restored my phone to factory settings but now it's just stuck looping so I wouldn't bother doing that unless you reallyyyy want to. Others are saying wait a few hours.
I didn't even know IOS9 came out today.. I literally haven't updated my phone in over a year, it was on IOS7 and I just picked today to do it out of the air.. Terrible timing!!
Thats a problem for so many users. I had IOS 6 the old version, and i decided to finally update just to get this. Just give it a couple of days and it should be fixed.
An update - I tried removing removing "Find my iPhone" via iCloud on my home computer, which you can apparently do, even if the phone is turned off.
Didn't make any difference in the end - rebooted & ended up back at "slide to update". Apparently, you have to physically turn it off on the device itself before you can do an emergency restore...which is not possible with the phone locked up.
I hope Apple comes out with a fix soon - I need my phone, and the data on it (mind you, after doing recovery mode, I've probably lost everything anyway).
Posted this on another discussion but..
For those of you who need their phone to just work, I have a temporary solution - provided that you made a back up prior to this (If you tried to update via iTunes then you probably would have and you can check by going to iTunes > Preferences > Devices and any back ups will be there.).
Boot the phone up in DFU mode (Detailed below if you don't know how to)
And restore the iPhone. This WILL erase all data. Once complete, set it up as a new iPhone and voila! It will work.. you just won't have anything on it.
I restored my back up after doing that and it led me back to the slide to upgrade part - so if you just need to use your phone, the above can work as a temporary fix. Until Apple gets back to us with more information..
I shall try an iCloud backup restore and see what that results in..
I posted this on the other thread as well.
This convoluted process worked for me (iPhone 6+):
- Did a hard reset *while iPhone plugged into iTunes.*
- iPhone asked for pass code which I entered.
- *Immediately* after the passcode was accepted on iPhone I pressed the "Restore iPhone.." button on iTunes. (iTunes had previously downloaded iOS 9 on a recovery attempt that failed earlier this evening).
- iTunes paused for a few seconds and then progress in extracting and verifying the restore was seen on iTunes as well as a long progress bar on the iPhone. It took a few minutes to restore the iPhone.
- iTunes gave this message: "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked. To set up and sync this iPhone, click Continue." (Aside: I had requested an unlock from ATT a few weeks ago for travel and had unlocked the iPhone already).
- I hit Continue on iTunes and saw: "Welcome to your new iPhone screen."
- iTunes gave an option to restore from past backups, most recent being an August 3rd backup in iTunes but not last night's iCloud backup.
- Restored to Aug 3rd backup in iTunes on Mac.
- Saw typical restore message: (paraphrasing) "The settings have been restored, will appear in iTunes in a few seconds."
- Saw long status bar on iPhone, then Hello screen. iTunes stating iPhone has iOS 9.0 and was last backed up on 8/3.
- iPhone proceeds to Location services screen (disabled it just in case), Touch ID, iCloud, Diagnostic screens as normal when setting up iPhone initially.
- Once the setup screens were done, the General -> About settings confirmed iOS 9 but it was obvious from the changes on the phone.
- Turned off Find My iPhone in iCloud settings.
- Went to Settings -> General -> Reset and selected "Erase all content and settings"
- Long status bar appeared on iPhone screen (as is normal for this) and eventually the usual screens appeared to set up a new phone. The iPhone still had iOS9.
- Reached "Apps and Data" screen with 4 options: Restore from iCloud Backup, Restore from iTunes Backup, Set up as a New iPhone, Move Data from Android.
- Selected Restore from iCloud Backup. Signed into iCloud. Had to agree to a Terms and Conditions. It offered last night's iCloud backup which I selected.
- iPhone showed "Restore from iCloud."
- iPhone is now restoring from iCloud which, I understand, takes 1-4 hours per gigabyte backed up in iCloud.
Maybe this will help some of you.
Seriously, does Apple have any employees monitoring these forums? Typical, they give us nothing! You think they would have the integrity to say "we know, we are working on it!" My son is in Germany and we communicate on an iPhone app and I am supposed to connect with him in the morning! What a garbage company Apple has become!
I had the same problem (iPhone 5). After trying to update software with no success, I restored my phone to factory settings and can now use it again; of course I'll have to reload my stuff from icloud.
1. Connect phone to computer
2. Hold Sleep and Home buttons down together. Do NOT let up when Apple logo appears; wait until iTunes logo and cable appear.
3. Click on iPhone image, top left on computer screen.
4. Attempt software update; if problem persists....
5. Repeat steps1-3 then select restore
Your phone should now work and be ready for you to reinstall desired apps, etc
Same problem. Did an upgrade, then had to restore to factory settings, applied my iTunes backup to the phone and now it's a white screen saying "slide to upgrade" but I can't click or swipe or do anything. My friend at work had the exact same issue today. Does anyone have any solutions yet?
Oh no this is exactly what i did too, didn't even realise until too late that it had only just been launched. Are Apple sending us some odd vibes to do so?!!!
My phone stuck in slide to upgrade once code entered and wifi selected then sticks and cannot do anything even with restart. Not happy!
Haha they must be! I find it pretty disgraceful to be honest. All these people suddenly with useless iPhones, they should let us revert back to the old IOS until they release a patch, or at least release a statement or an apology. I thought Apple were supposed to be good at this kind of thing!
I rely on my phone to run my business as well as currently being in the middle of organising my Grandfather's funeral.. Everyone will have their own personal sticky situation. It's just frustrating, my phone has been redundant for 16 hours now and my nearest Apple store is an hour away... Shambles!!!
Do any of them even read these forums?! 😕
Completely at a loss what to do, I know I could set up my phone as a 'new iPhone', but will I be able to get any of my contacts or call logs or will it be completely empty?
I Have been trying everything that people and the Internet have recommended and nothing!
When I tried restoring it and setting it up as a new iPhone, it automatically loads the latest version of iOS, which means the loop starts again. Back to square one.
We're all no without working iPhones. What do Apple plan on doing? They must be reading these threads
This is the solution I tried and it worked - and I maintained my contacts, photos etc. Only thing were missing were apps, but once re-downloaded, all their settings were actually intact.
This only works if you have a back up - if you did an update via iTunes, you could be in luck. OTA not so much..
(check iTunes > Preferences > Devices to check your available backup(s))
Yes, this works harpreet! Folks, don't make the same mistake I made... you MUST do a shift+restore as the instructions say to be able to select the firmware to restore to! (from https://ipsw.me/8.4.1) and also, there are two versions for each phone! GSM and Global! You can determine which you have by phone model number here: http://ios8release.com/check-iphone-gsm-or-global-model/
Good Luck!
POTENTIAL FIX
Hi,
I had the same issues updating from 7.2.1 on my iPhone 5; it crashed in the slide to upgrade screen. Then after a reset I got to an endless "slide to upgrade", then a black apple logo and back to "slide to upgrade" loop...
After 18 hours of experimenting and restoring, here's what worked for me (and I hope other people too):
Short version:
- Hit restore in iTunes, agree to the license agreement, after the Hello screen skip and decline or switch off everything, unlock the phone, enter your apple ID then sync your phone. Expect a grey apple with a progress bar to get in your way quite often during the process and for a long time but it will disappear eventually allowing you to progress slowly.
Long version:
1. Plug your phone into a computer with a USB cable and start iTunes.
2. Click on the iPhone and click "Restore iPhone..."
3. Allow iTunes to reinstall OS 9 (I actually deleted the ipsw file from ~/Library/Application Support/iTunes/iphone software updates/ to force a new download)
4. "Restore in progress" *might* appear on the screen - it did on mine but not my sisters which just had an apple logo and progress bar on it.
5. After the Hello Screen, you'll be asked for a pass code... tap "Passcode options" and then the bottom option "Don't Add Passcode" then "Continue"
6. I think this was where I was asked to join my Wifi network. Wherever it comes in the sequence, tap "Skip this Step" anyway.
7. You'll be asked to enter your Apple ID for iCloud... tap "Skip This Step" followed by "Skip"
8. Tap "Don't Use Find My iphone"
9. Tap "Turn Off iCloud Drive"
10. Tap "Don't Send to Apple"
11. Tap "Get Started"
12. iTunes might want to update the carrier settings which you can say yes too (I think it says "download and update").
13. Allow the phone to install all the apps and finish the restore. A grey Apple with a progress bar might flash between it and the home screen for 15 minutes or so.
14. iOS 9 home screen should appear during the sync. Apple ID verification will be on the unlock screen. Slide it to unlock the phone and take you to a dialogue asking to enter your Apple ID - tap "settings" OR go into settings and log into your Apple ID if you don't see this.
15. The grey apple might reappear and flash between it and the home screen again whilst you try to enter your Apple ID - wait for it to disappear (might be a couple of minutes).
16. Type in your apple ID and allow syncing to finish. My phone accessed the internet for quite a while afterwards but ignore that...
17. Hit Sync in iTunes to copy across all your music, podcasts etc. - that horrible grey apple and progress bar flickers again during the sync. It WILL go away in the end.
18. Wait.... it will sync eventually. I have a 64GB and it took about an hour. Remember to include contacts and calendars in the sync.
19. If you lost camera roll photos I can recommend Picturescue to grab them from a back up (only if you backed up your phone to your computer and didn't encrypt it.) It's $10 but worth it IMHO.
20. Take a huge sigh of relief if this has worked, go into settings and sign into iTunes, add a passcode, sign into icloud and generally do all the other things you said no to during initial setup and haven't been restored.
If you didn't need the health app before this, you will now - it's on the first page :-)
Welcome to iOS 9... it just (about) works.
Regards,
Paul
I've just discovered that having a 4 digit passcode (not sure about other types) on the lock screen causes iOS9 to go back to the "slide to upgrade" crash after using the phone for about 4 hours. I've just restored and switched the passcode off for now (iPhone 5). There is definitely a bug with the passcode and installer.
Its totally disgraceful that so many customers have been left high and dry without a working phone. My husband and I are of a mature age and whilst have no problems using our iPhones, we aren't very techy! The stress incurred trying to navigate this problem and find a solution, has been a nightmare. Its only down to the advice from other community users that we at least have a phone that can make and accept calls again. He has lost everything else ! Not the end of the world by any means compared to others problems but still frustrating.
