iPhone 5 Stuck on slide to upgrade after iOS 9 update..

Hi all,

I was rather happy with iOS 7 so never upgraded to 8 - but then 9 has just come out so I decided I would finally update my iPhone for the battery enhancements. Updated it via iTunes and the install seemed to go well, however, I'm now stuck on the slide to upgrade screen and my phone is just unresponsive - it won't slide!

It comes up the first time and it works, I enable location services and Wi-Fi, but then the slide message comes up again and it doesn't work.

I've hard to reboot the iPhone with the Sleep and Home button, but get stuck on the same part again.

Anyone else struggling?

Hello,

I think you can't do it because you have to log on on your iphone but you can't since the upgrade.

To be able to restore from the procedure given by harpreet0singh you have to enter your iphone in DFU mode (step 3) before trying to restore.

I think that you have to connect your iphone to your computer before the step 3:

"Step 3 - Reboot phone into DFU mode - hold down power button and home button - when it reboots let go of power button - still hold home button"

You should have this screen: https://support.apple.com/library/content/dam/edam/applecare/images/en_US/mac_ap ps/itunes/itunes_connect_diagram.png

Thanks harpreet0singh, I followed your instructions and it worked!

I had the "slide to upgrade" problem on an Ipad Mini 2. I initially tried restoring to iOS9 and restoring my backup (which was recent because I backup to iCloud, love that solution!), but it also got stuck along the way, although in a different way. I almost thought I couldn't put the iPad back into DFU mode, but managed to get it to work. Second time I restored to iOS 8.4.1 as per your instructions, and it worked perfectly.

Thanks again harpreet0singh. Obviously there are a lot of users with this problem, and you have helped a lot of us. But where is the official advice from Apple?

same problem here with my iPad 2. it's totally useless now. Tried hard reset, reset to factory setting, nothing works. going to try the downgrade to 8.4.1 and see. Thank goodness it didn't happen on my iPhone though. so sorry to hear that this happened to iPhone users.

just more info for Apple. I upgraded iPad 2 using OTA. I did the same thing for my iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini1 and it's fine. I used iTunes to upgrade my iPad Air 1 and my iPhone 5 and they all worked.

So if nothing works, and I take it back to the Apple Store, shouldn't they replace/fix it for free? After all I followed their instruction and it was their software that broke my iPad.

If you're having the 'Find my iPhone needs to be turned off issue' - It's because you're in recovery mode and not in DFU mode. The two are very different.

If you're stuck on the slide to upgrade screen, press the home and power button to hard reset the phone. It will restart and send you back to slide to upgrade. Slide it the first time and enter your passcode but DO NOT press update/upgrade to finish..

Instead, hold your power button and slide to turn your phone off (with your cable plugged in I must add!)

When your phone is turned off, press and hold both the power and home buttons for exactly 10 seconds.. and then let go of just the power button and keep holding the home button until iTunes recognises that you are in DFU mode. Hope that helps!

HHi, have been struggling to with the same issue on my daughters phone. I have followed your instructions and have downloaded the 8.4.1 firmware and extracted the zip file. When I get to that part of your instructions to restore and hold the shift key down I click on the unzipped file there are no files there. HELP!!

I Have downloaded the gsm file as the model no of the phone is A1507.

Thanks harpreet0singh. I couldn't get my files out (pictures) however. Instead of doing a restore, I used "option" and "update" instead of "restore", selected the .ipsw file and downgraded to iOS 8. The white screen returned but this time when I went through with it, the upgrade process manages to complete and I retained my files 🙂 (never took a backup... will do so now...) and now running iOS 8.
