iPhone 5 Stuck on slide to upgrade after iOS 9 update..

Hi all,

I was rather happy with iOS 7 so never upgraded to 8 - but then 9 has just come out so I decided I would finally update my iPhone for the battery enhancements. Updated it via iTunes and the install seemed to go well, however, I'm now stuck on the slide to upgrade screen and my phone is just unresponsive - it won't slide!

It comes up the first time and it works, I enable location services and Wi-Fi, but then the slide message comes up again and it doesn't work.

I've hard to reboot the iPhone with the Sleep and Home button, but get stuck on the same part again.

Anyone else struggling?

Thanks for finding and posting this fix. I'd spent three hours on a Saturday night trying to sort this out before finding your post. I followed the Appple support recommendations, tried the reinstall (several times) and got stuck with the "turn off Find iPhone on your iphone" when I couldn't get in.

Downloaded and installed 8.4.1 and phone now back up and restoring data. I should have known better than to install a new apple ios without waiting for at least the first two sets of update fixes (i know once bitten should be twice shy). It's the same reason I hadn't updated from ios 7 once it became stable. How hard would it have been to put a notification on the front end that "You must turn OFF find iPhone before attempting to install this update".

What's even more surprising is that this issue has been evident from at least the 16th and the same update is still being pushed out to users. Customer service at its best.....

IMPORTANT NOTE TO RECOVER ALL YOUR DATA: You DO NOT need to wipe your phone with this method. Simply click the Update button instead of Restore while clicking Option (Mac) or Shift (Win). It will open the window to select the IPSW just as if you hit restore but your phone will come back as if you did an update and you will not need to restore from a backup or start as a new phone. This is especially important if you don't have a recent backup.

For those of you using this method here is a modified simpler set of INSTRUCTIONS TO UPDATE and RECOVER ALL YOU DATA WITHOUT a BACKUP

Step 1 - Download IOS 8.4.1 IPSW as noted in the original post or google "8.4.1 IPSW"

Step 2 - Connect the stuck iDevice to iTunes. It should still appear in iTunes. If not soft reset by holding home+power until it restarts while connected to your computer. If you have a passcode, you will get an error initially. If so, swipe through the Hello screen on the device and enter the passcode. It will go back to being stuck but that will allow iTunes to connect.

Step 4 - Hold down the Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) and and then click UPDATE (VERY IMPORTANT. DO NOT HIT RESTORE).

Step 5 - Browse to the 8.4.1 file you downloaded and select it. This should Update to the previous IOS version and you will be back in business. Note: This WILL NOT wipe phone.
