iTunes 12.3 problems

Hi all,

I can't get the new iTunes to download. Getting error "There is a problem with this installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run."

Installed iOS9 on my phone - and PC wouldn't recognize it. Uninstalled iTunes 12.2.25 after several attempts at the update to 12.3, so now I have no tunes on the PC...

Thanks for any assistance.

I found a workaround, which should for any version of Windows (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10):

1) Close iTunes if open

2) Use a program such as 7-zip to open up the iTunes 12.3 executable (e.g. iTunes6464Setup.exe) and extract the following:

  • iTunes6464.msi
  • AppleApplicationSupport64.msi
  • AppleMobileDeviceSupport6464.msi

NOTE: the names will vary slight for 32-bit OSs

3) Right-click on AppleApplicationSupport64.msi and choose install. If there is a prompt to repair or install then choose repair.

4) Right-click on AppleMobileDeviceSupport6464.msi and choose install. If there is a prompt to repair or install then choose repair.

5) Right-click on iTunes6464.msi and choose install.

Recommendation: Preform these steps of upgrading iTunes after updating all your devices to iOS 9 due a different problem.

Cause: The problem most likely is caused by AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi for 64-bit versions of Windows.

Try Fix unexpected quits or launch issues in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If the issue persists and you have a 64-bit system try the for older video cards version which is a 64-bit installer for mostly 32-bit code, similar to all 64-bit versions of iTunes up to 12.1.

If you've tried the above without success then see the method in Install missing components. What component fails to install, and what error message does it give? See this post for steps to produce detailed logs of the installation which may reveal why iTunes won't install.

Yeah man I have a problem with my iTunes now too. Ever since I upgraded to iTunes 12.3, the stupid thing won't read my iPhone anymore or my iPad. I even followed all the steps that all these people say are working, downloading and using 7-Zip to extract and all that jazz, even tried it AFTER upgrading my iOS to iOS 9 and everything and still it won't register my apple devices. What am I doing wrong? This is annoying now and I can't even change what I have on my iphone as far as music or videos goes. I have an iPhone 5s and I'm on Windows 10 btw. I can't even back it up anymore! Please help!

The workaround of KraftyInSeattle helped for me, as I wrote before. BUT I had the same issue that I could not sync my iPhone, since it was not shown in iTunes. What helped, was another repair with "AppleMobileDeviceSupport6464.msi".

So, first the workaround as decribed by KraftyinSeattle and after this, just install "AppleMobileDeviceSupport6464.msi" (not an older version - with me the latest version worked...) again and click on "Repair" and everything has been fine.
