iOS 9 update mail shows as unread? All 43000!

I did the update to iOS 9 on my 6, and now my email icon shows 43,000+ as if they're al unread. The usual "mark as unread" isn't working.

I had the same problem, 45000 plus emails,

it seems to be an issue with POP accounts,

if you go to your mail settings and turn off the account you suspect then go and look. I have 4 on my phone, I turned off the pop account and 45,000 went instantly down to 66 which is the number synced with my MS exchange account as my other 2 accounts have no unread.

perfect!

I turned the pop account back on and all 45000 came back on the badge.

so I then deleted the POP account and re installed and it seemed to work for me

good luck!

There were several users at work that had a similar problem on a smaller scale with Exchange account. I had 24 "unread" email. I went to mail sync settings page and slid "mail"to the off position then edited sync period. I had it set to sync 3 days so I changed it to sync 1 day. After sliding mail to the on position, forcing mail to re-sync, all the "unread" mail was gone.

Worked for us, hope it helps.

Updated to iOS 9.0.2 last night and had this unread email problem. This worked for me to clear the unread email count in the all mailboxes inbox. I went into all inbox and kept scrolling up, allowed mail to download (about 250 at a time), scrolled up again and again until all mail items have been downloaded then push edit and mark all as read, that's it all done! Looks like this problem, at least in my case had something to do with my POP mail server keeping mail on the server and Mail app picking it up as unread but still to be downloaded to the phone. Hope this will help others out there.

I had this issue too and went through a full restore iPhone/Setup as New. That only worked for 12 hours. When the problem came back today, this is what I did and so far (*crosses fingers*) it's still working fine:

Try turning off all mail except for the iCloud account in Settings --> Mail.

Open the mailbox inbox, force close the mailbox (swipe to close the app).

Go to Settings --> Mail and turn on mail again and the badge/unread notification clears.

I have the same problem. I'll delete my email (exchange) account and it'll go back to zero. However, it starts going up after that. I think that I found out how it does on mine, but I don't have a fix for it. When I get duplicate spam emails, the iphone combines them, like when people reply to an email. When this happens and I delete the email, it deletes both of them, both only registers that it deleted one of them. Like I said, not sure how to fix it, but at least I know what is causing it.

Ditto on all the above until I turned off the badge icon for my hotmail POP account. It was definitely the offending account as I'd turned off the individual accounts one by one to check the problem. Didn't work the first time but left it switched off on that account for a couple of minutes and then switched it back on....hey presto. Lovely '0' unread emails.....and I had 42M at one point....get your head round that!

Fingers crossed this helps others.

Answering my own question as Apple don't seem inclined to do so!

It's all very well turning off the badge icons but the "All inboxes" will forever show the number of unread emails..

to finally get rid of all the little buggers so you can show a clean "All inboxes" this is what I did.......

It takes the best part of two or three hours and a few strong cups tea/coffee or whatever

and patience.......

lots of it.....

I went to the one of the two mail accounts which I had which which showed the near 7,000 unread emails

in this case it was BT

so on to the BT mailbox and I started scrolling down - stopping immediately when I saw more emails were being downloaded

they came in batches of 250 to start with then any old number

just keep scrolling down until the blue dots start to appear and then edit and delete

but don't think you can delete all 250 at once

oh no

I was only able to do a dozen at a time

the trick is to stop immediately you see more downloading and wait until that's finished

otherwise the whole thing locks and you have to turn if off etc etc etc

continue scrolling down and down through the years

until you have eventually deleted all the blue dots

it takes for ever

and you grow old in the process

but this is the idiots guide to removing thousands of blue dotted unread emails and goodness you feel good at the end.......

but mighty ****** off that Apple which I love to bits couldn't have done it for me.

Hope this helps those of us who are not techno-savvy!!!

this incidentally was on an iPad Air 2

I went to the local Apple Store and the "Genius" told me to delete the offending accounts, then power off. Wait a few minutes and power back on. Then add the accounts. This worked great...for about 10 minutes! I no longer have a false notification, but in my list of email accounts, it sows new mail in 2 of my accounts. I am on an iPhone 6 Plus running IOS 9.1. This started happening after the IOS 9 upgrade. It seems kind of funny though that it doesn't happen to my Gmail account, only my exchange and Hotmail account. Come on Apple, another "compatibility" issue with Microsoft? I think it may be time to investigate a Samsung.

I have the iPhone 6+, IOS 9.1. My fix, below. I do not know if it will apply to you guys or not, worth a shot i suppose.
I had an unread email icon that would not go away no matter how many times i checked, deleted or moved emails around.

1. I went to Settings, Mail-Contact-Calendars, selected the only email account i use (3 to choose from) and moved the Off/On Slider for Mail to Off.

2. I shut down my phone.

3. Powered on my phone, repeated the steps above and moved the On/Off Slider to On.

My unread email icon finally disappeared. I have my Mail Days To Sync setting set to No Limit Sync. Not sure if that matters. On step one above, if you have more than one email account that is set to On, turn them off and follow the power down step and see if that works. I hope this helps.
