The "permanent" key is to turn off "raise to listen." The problem for many is that if you don't use iMessage you won't see the option to turn off "raise to listen" in Settings->Messages. If you don't use iMessage then you'll need to turn iMessage on in order to reveal the "raise to listen" (and other) settings. After turning on iMessage, turn off "raise to listen", then turn off iMessage again if you like. No more grey box. Hoorah!

This happened to me but magically disappeared. I checked the settings and that, char count, t was turned off.

One thing that will work is, double click home button, delete messaging app, re-open the messaging app, go back to the person you were texting, and the grey bar will then be removed.
