iCloud Backup Broken After iOS 9 Upgrade

iCloud Backup on both my iPhone and iPad have been working fine for years until I upgraded to iOS 9. After the upgrade it said my latest backup was "Never". When I pressed "Backup Now" the progress bar flashed quickly then went back to saying my latest backup was "Never" (no error messages).

I decided to try turning iCloud Backup off and back on again. When I try to turn in on it says "iCloud Backup Failed. There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup.".

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix?

I have this problem too immediately after updating my iPad mini retina (model ME280LL/A) after upgrading to iOS 9.

previous version was 8.4.1

I have just completed a backup before the upgrade.

guess I better not update any of my other iDevices?

This is an major problem.

iCloud backup works just fine with iOS 9. Again, the servers are inundated right now. You might get in during a lull, as I did a couple of hours ago, and the backup will occur without any issues. There is no need to mess around with your device, and downgrade the iOS. This is not an iOS-related issue. It is a capacity issue with the servers.

If everyone will just calm down and give it a couple more days, things will start to level out and will go back to normal.

Millions of people all trying to access and utilize the servers at the same time - it's a traffic jam. Time for a little Zen moment.... 🙂

I don't think it is a server load issue, as my iPad Air backs up just fine. I should point out however that it is running iOS 9.1 beta. Interestingly when it was running iOS 9 GM, it had the iCloud backup issue, but after upgrading to iOS 9.1 beta it fixed itself.

Further to this, on my iPhone 6, under Manage Storage my iPhone 6 shows that I have 0KB of data backed up, which is not true. When I look up the backup options, it shows all of my apps have "No Data", which is also not true. Also, it says I am using up 1.2GB of my iCloud storage, however my iPhone backup shows as 0KB, and my iPad Air shows a backup size of 522MB. That doesn't add up - it's almost as if my iPhone backup is there, just not showing up.

So I tried updating my iPhone 6 to iOS 9.1 beta, hoping it would fix it like it did with my iPad Air, and it didn't. Problem persisted. iPhone 6 restored back to iOS 9. Still can't backup.

The servers have everything to do with it. There is nothing wrong with the iOS. Earlier today my iPhone wouldn't back up to iCloud. Tonight it did. I got in during a lull. Everyone just needs to relax. There may be some devices with unique issues, but by and large this is just a case of everyone trying to access the same place via the same road.

The fact that everyone has their own 5GB (or more) of iCloud storage reserved for them is irrelevant. You all still have to access it via the same servers that are being pounded by people trying to update to iOS 9, restore because of issues, upload and download to and from iCloud Photo Library, iCloud Music Library, iCloud Drive.

Until thing settle down, you won't know if you have a unique issue or if you are just suffering from the same bottleneck that most of us are. So, there is just no advantage to trying to reset, restore, erase, modify, or otherwise mess with you devices right now.

BTW - My iPhone also said Last Backup = Never, Last Backup = 0GB. Now it is all reset and normal looking because my phone was able to back up. I did not initiate it. I just plugged the phone in and let it alone for a couple of hours.

Best of luck,

This is not a server issue, nor a device problem. There must be a bug with iOS 9 that breaks iCloud backup. I have done multiple restores to earlier backups on my computer and iCloud to no avail. I have tried to delete my last backup in iCloud and cannot, getting an error that a backup or a restore is running (but have confirmed it is not). When I turn iCloud Backup off and on again, I get an error that I cannot backup my device to iCloud and it too says Never in last backup, even though I can see it when logging into iCloud portal. I guess we have no choice but to eagerly await a fix from Apple. In the meantime tell friends and family NOT to upgrade to IOS 9 until Apple resolves this issue.

A SOLUTION!!! I HOPE FOR ALL OF YOU

I'm not sure if you have the problem fixed at this point… I had the same problem.

Spoke to an Apple agent who had me reset the phone and back up to a backup that was from just prior to the update. However, this did not fix the problem.

it still wouldn't allow me to backup to the icloud after the reset and restore. It also was showing that I had 0kB to backup and that NONE of my apps had ANY data. Very strange.

Anyway, I decided to back up to iTunes ( shutting off iCloud back up temporarily). the backup to iTunes worked without a problem. At least I was confident that I had a recent backup at this point so God forbid I needed to return the phone or something like that.

once I had the backup to iTunes... I decided to turn backup to iCloud back on and IT WORKED. Not sure why....but it did

I hope this helps
