iCloud Backup Broken After iOS 9 Upgrade

iCloud Backup on both my iPhone and iPad have been working fine for years until I upgraded to iOS 9. After the upgrade it said my latest backup was "Never". When I pressed "Backup Now" the progress bar flashed quickly then went back to saying my latest backup was "Never" (no error messages).

I decided to try turning iCloud Backup off and back on again. When I try to turn in on it says "iCloud Backup Failed. There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup.".

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix?

iPhone 6, iOS 9

I have this problem too immediately after updating my iPad mini retina (model ME280LL/A) after upgrading to iOS 9.

previous version was 8.4.1

I have just completed a backup before the upgrade.

guess I better not update any of my other iDevices?

This is an major problem.

Hi there. I can't take full credit for this solution (someone mentioned it on the web), but it just worked for me, at least for a backup I just created(we'll have to see if the automated overnight backup succeeds tonight). I noticed that I was unable to delete my existing backup (from 8.4) from my phone. It kept saying try again. I can't say if this will work on a pc (although I presume it would using the windows icloud app), but I went on my mac, went to system preferences, then icloud. I then went to manage storage and, unlike on my phone, was able to delete the existing backup. Once I deleted it, I then went back to my phone and initiated a backup. It took awhile to backup, presumably because it was a full, not incremental backup, but it eventually succeeded. My theory is that ios 9 can't work with the existing 8.4 backup for whatever reason. So, starting from scratch with an ios 9 backup seems to work. If you're concerned about deleting your backup, just backup to itunes first. I tend to do that once a week anyway, since I don't totally trust icloud backup.

By the way, before posting this, I initiated a second backup. It took a minute or two (presumably, because it was incremental), and it also was a success. There may be a bug in how ios 9 does it's backup, but this may be a workaround. Also, my ipad was able to backup today, but I note that I was able to delete it's existing backup from the ipad, and that may be why it also succeeded.

a) I thought that I had a successful WiFi iCloud BU last night, not so sure now, it may have been iTunes to iCloud

b) Since then no Manual or Auto WiFi iCloud BU has worked

c) I can do an iCloud BU from iTunes

d) I still can't delete the BU from the phone over WiFi

Has Apple deigned to comment on all this yet ? There are a ton of people who are going to need BUs when they pick up their 6s phone Friday .......

Itunes backups of your phone are saved locally on your hard drive, and if you use time machine or another backup, would also be saved on your external drive. They are not on any cloud, unless, for example, you backed up the backup file to dropbox. You would have to research the exact location of the backup file on your hard drive. It would be easy to get that info. I just don't remember off the top of my head.

Read my previous post on how to delete the existing cloud backup from your mac.

there is an "iCloud" button and a "This Computer" button in iTunes - the iCloud button says "Back up the most important data on your iPhone to iCloud", and it lists latest BUs to iCloud and local Mac

am I misunderstanding ?

If I do iCloud, Manual BU from iTunes, that date/time is what the phone reflects when I look at the "latest BU date/time" under iCloud on the phone

In iTunes, it lists a date/time BU'ed to "iCloud", and another date/time BU'ed to "this Mac" from today

No. itunes backup is in addition to icloud backup. Don't mess with the buttons. Icloud is just where you automatically backup. If you want a local backup, just click backup now, and let it do it's thing. You will then have a current backup on your computer as well as whatever backup is on apple's cloud. Apple has a lot of help articles on this if you don't follow what I'm saying. The 2 backups are different. One on the computer, one on the cloud. Your problem is with the one on the cloud. The previous post told you what I did to delete the cloud backup, to then clear the way for, hopefully, a successful cloud backup for you from your phone on ios 9.

OK, I think I've got it, thanks.

I did delete the phone BU from the Mac, and was able to do a new, full, manual BU from the phone, so this worked for me. I'm not going to play with it again until Thursday before picking up the new phone, hopefully Apple will say/fix something before then. I will add that I did have one successful BU last night, after iOS 9, but not sure if it could have been incremental with an existing previous iOS 8 BU, will see if the Auto works tomorrow.

This does tend to weaken the case for Server load being the root cause ?

I did try to edit my old posts, but even though I am logged in, it doesn't give me the EDIT button ?

I have 4 devices upgraded to iOS 9 on 3 different Apple accounts and all the 4 are experiencing icloud backup issue.

Yesterday, I have succeeded to delete old backups done with iOS 8.4 and to trigger manual icloud backups on 3 devices.

But 24 hours later, there is still no automatic icloud backup performed. I try again to do manual bakup but succeed only with one device. On the 2 other, the backup fails after 10 or 15 minutes trying.

I think the issue is on the server side, otherwise I should not be able to perform manual backup sometimes and fail on other times.

I actually don't think this is server related, because both me and my girlfriend has an iPhone 6, I upgraded to ios9 whereas she is still on 8.4. Backup on her phone works every single side but for me I only managed to backup ONCE (did not backup automatically when charging last night), and that was yesterday after I deleted my old 8.4 iCloud backup. I think this indicates that it is ios9 itself that causes the problem.
