iCloud Backup Broken After iOS 9 Upgrade

iCloud Backup on both my iPhone and iPad have been working fine for years until I upgraded to iOS 9. After the upgrade it said my latest backup was "Never". When I pressed "Backup Now" the progress bar flashed quickly then went back to saying my latest backup was "Never" (no error messages).

I decided to try turning iCloud Backup off and back on again. When I try to turn in on it says "iCloud Backup Failed. There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup.".

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix?

I know this is lame, but have you gone to the Apple store or phoned support - I am not sure that deleting a back up is good practice at ALL ever because it was a back up that is now gone and the Apple document I read said once you delete a back up from your device you no longer will be able to back to iCloud - have you phoned support and let them walk you through some options? Is iTunes available to you in the interim?

I understand the importance of back ups and am a wee tired of the "set up as new" as a cure when we all back up everything all the time so that never has to happen. I thought I had the same trouble and it turns out when my phone was supposed to back up it simply dropped wifi (my own issue) and could not. Once reconnected, the back up went through.

Also, you can back to iCloud via iTunes and can load on Mac or PC for free. Have you tried that and then that might get you a back up?

I have talked to Apple support several times and deleting the existing backup was what I was told to do. In my case (I've been having problems with the phone not backing up since updating to ios 9.1) deleting the backup worked because the phone did backup afterwards. However, the problem still persists for me, as I can get maybe one or two backups (automatically) then they stop completely and then I have to do a manual backup. I updated to 9.2.1 the day it came out but I'm still having problems getting the phone to work like it's supposed to.

Terrible bug. Agreed. Mine sometimes doesn't automatically back up either - to iCloud. Sometimes it does. What helps me is to wake it up long after the 24-hour mark and lock it again and wait. It then makes a back up. Left on its own, mostly mine does not. Manual back ups to iCloud are not a problem. So, I am grateful (though annoyed, too) that it won't do it on it's own. Do be sure it's not dropping wifi - mine does (no other device does) even on my own network. So,it charades as not backing up when in fact it can't. If you're one to wake in the middle of the night peek at it and make sure it's holding it's wifi.
