iCloud Backup Broken After iOS 9 Upgrade

iCloud Backup on both my iPhone and iPad have been working fine for years until I upgraded to iOS 9. After the upgrade it said my latest backup was "Never". When I pressed "Backup Now" the progress bar flashed quickly then went back to saying my latest backup was "Never" (no error messages).

I decided to try turning iCloud Backup off and back on again. When I try to turn in on it says "iCloud Backup Failed. There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup.".

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix?

iPhone 6, iOS 9

I have this problem too immediately after updating my iPad mini retina (model ME280LL/A) after upgrading to iOS 9.

previous version was 8.4.1

I have just completed a backup before the upgrade.

guess I better not update any of my other iDevices?

This is an major problem.

Just talked to Apple Support chat. I'm having the same issue. Couldn't backup so I tried deleting the backup and tried all the other suggestions. Now I have a 0kb backup that I can't delete. They said the engineers are still working on it, but they have a fix currently. They said to backup to iTunes, wipe and restore your phone, delete any iCloud backups if you see any, then try backing up again. I have not had a chance to try this, but wanted to pass this along. I will try this later today and an Apple support member will call me this evening.

I definitely am. In fact, I'm in a much worse position now. The Apple rep said to try a restore of my phone which is their temporary fix. I didn't feel comfortable with doing that with only an iTunes backup keeping me from losing about 7 years of data. I have an iPad mini and an iPad 4 that I never updated from 8.4 skin thought I'd go ahead and do that. I updated them with no issues and they both actually backed up to iCloud once. Now? I have three devices which all do not back up anymore and all have 0kb backups with repetitive "Last backup could not be completed." All are on 9.2.1.

Mine has been all over the place. The 0kb backup which the Apple rep tried to convince me was fine, then finicky infrequent backups, then finicky iTunes backups, and now neither iTunes nor iCloud will back up and I'm pretty irritated with the whole thing at this point. THIS is a way larger issue than the insignificant little annoyances they've fixed over the course of iOS 9 and it should've been resolved within the first week.

You will always be asked to take a backup before updating. You usually do it to iCloud but this time iCloud is the issue so you have to take it to iTunes.

The update went smoothly for me and fixed the iCloud backup issue. At last I was able to backup my phone. The scary prompt that my iPhone hasn't been backed up in 45 weeks is gone 🙂

iTunes tells me that phone has become disconnected -54

yes latest version of iOS. Yes deleted older backups.

DRove 3 hours to Minneapolis to work with Apple Store people. Worked with simply Mac people in town. Went to local Verizon store. Read for hours on fixes tried them.

best answer I have got was "wipe your phone back to new and see if that works but you will loose all data that hasn't been backed up if that doesn't work we can get you a replacement". This was from the Verizon rep at the retail location I went to

I Also had the same issue of not being able to backup to itunes. After a few minute, backup fails and the message said that the phone was disconnected. I replaced the cable and tried again, same thing. Then did wifi sync and I think this is when it worked.

One more note about iCloud backup (and I strongly believe this is what fixed the issue): I deleted the backup, then tried toe backup and it showed 0kb. I clicked the backup and disabled all app. Kept the smallest one with a few KBs. Backup completed, then i turned on more apps to backup and it was successful again. I kept doing this until I reached apps that has 300mb (turning them on one by one and completing a backup every time I turn on one app). The last app was whatsapp which had 1.8 GB backed up and now the whole phone backs u succefully.
