iCloud Backup Broken After iOS 9 Upgrade

iCloud Backup on both my iPhone and iPad have been working fine for years until I upgraded to iOS 9. After the upgrade it said my latest backup was "Never". When I pressed "Backup Now" the progress bar flashed quickly then went back to saying my latest backup was "Never" (no error messages).

I decided to try turning iCloud Backup off and back on again. When I try to turn in on it says "iCloud Backup Failed. There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup.".

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix?

iPhone 6, iOS 9

I have this problem too immediately after updating my iPad mini retina (model ME280LL/A) after upgrading to iOS 9.

previous version was 8.4.1

I have just completed a backup before the upgrade.

guess I better not update any of my other iDevices?

This is an major problem.

I have been in the same boat. I have multiple ios devices, but only 1 had never been able to back up to icloud successfully in any way. I just upgraded from 4s to 6s, but since I can't do a backup on old one I can't restore from it. It's funny that the new one can easy backup to icloud using the same account. It's like the 4s has something corrupt.

After 14 weeks, it finally worked. I opened itunes and turned OFF the auto sync. Plugged my iphone 4s in and only used the manual backup function then immediately restored from that backup. The only result is that settings, texts, etc are overwritten with a new set of data. Everything was there and apps untouched. I didn't sync, just manual backup to computer and immediate restore. Ran icloud backup from phone, and boom. Can't believe it.

Have you deleted all of your existing iCloud backups? When you go to Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage Storage and click on your device, what does it say you next backup size should be? Is it more than the amount of storage you have available to make a backup? (for example, my next backup for my iPhone 5s is 6.8GB. If I was only using the 5GB free storage, it wouldn't be able to back up.

Do you have any other devices backing up to iCloud?

Cheers,

iCloud backup is still beyond broken. I have done everything short of completely wiping out my whole iCloud. I deleted all data from my iCloud except for backups of other devices and my iCloud Photos. I then completely wiped my phone using the option+click method and tried backing up after the phone was completely wiped out. Guess what? It still failed. I tried again and it actually completed. However, I went to try it again about 30 minutes later and it will not back up again. It started and said about 1 minute remaining since there wasn't really any data it needed to back up, but it sat at that point for about 4-5 minutes. It then moved to halfway, but the remaining time jumped from about 1 minute to 5 minutes then went up to 8 minutes. It sat there for a while again and then the bar again progressed almost all the way, but when it got to that point, it changed to "Estimating time remaining..." and didn't move. It then eventually failed again.

I have 200GB of iCloud space so storage obviously isn't an issue. I have a synchronous gigabit internet connection so speed obviously isn't an issue. This is 100% a problem on the Apple server side.

Yes I have deleted existing iCloud backups of my iphone 5s. The next backup should be 470Mo, I have an iPad on the same account (running iOS 7 and working perfectly on icloud) which takes 450Mo of storage. So I have 4Go available on my icloud... When I launch icloud backup on my iphone 5s, it stops after a few minutes with the message "the last backup could not be completed". Since iOS 9....

I don't know what to do...

FINALLY! I MAY HAVE SOLVED IT!! Fingers crossed, but I may have finally fixed my issue. I couldn't seem to get my iPhone 6S to backup no matter what. I wish I had thought of the solution before I went through this nightmare ordeal over the last few weeks. I had tried everything, and yes, I do mean everything. Deleted the backup, tried unselecting all apps hoping it was some corrupted app data, , tried a different wifi network, turned off backup and turned it back on, signed in and out of iCloud, reset my phone, wiped my phone and restored from iTunes backup, wiped my phone and started from new. I thought it was weird that even a fresh install in which all I did was sign into iCloud then hit Backup didn't even work. I even went way farther than these troubleshooting steps and deleted all app data in my iCloud except for my iCloud Photo Library and some successful backups from other devices. I also removed any traces of my phone from my iCloud by going into my AppleID management and removing it from the list and removing it as a trusted device. Except for the photos and the other backups, I essentially nuked my iCloud. I even went so far as to nuke my phone by doing a full DFU restore to make sure there wasn't something that was getting left behind during restore. None of this worked. If a DFU restore didn't work, then it HAS to be server side. DFU restore would be like having a brand new phone.

During my extensive testing and work, (and I do mean extensive. I've spent easily 100+ hours over the last month and a half trying to figure this out doing research and trying anything I could think of.) I noticed something strange. Whenever I would wipe the phone and go through the set up, whenever I would go to my iCloud section the first time, it would ask me to put in my password again to verify it. Thought it was very weird to do that for a fresh install, so I thought that maybe there was something wrong with my iCloud account and maybe the password key on the servers. I decided to go ahead and change my password. My previous password met the requirements, so I know that wasn't an issue. Either way, I changed my iCloud password and then signed out on my 6S and then reset my phone. I wanted to clear out anything left over. I powered it back on and signed into iCloud with the new password. I went and tried a manual iCloud backup, and voila! It worked!!! I have tried it a subsequent two times and it completed successfully each time. I am in the process of restoring a stripped down iTunes backup that only contains my Watch data, Activity data, messages, and voicemails. I may try restoring a full backup later if this one works. If you've tried everything else and still have issues, try changing your iCloud password. 6 weeks in and I finally seem to be able to back up. I am currently backing up my phone from that stripped down restore and it is actually telling me how much time it has left. Typically, it wouldn't even say that. I will come back and update whether it was successful or not. Pray with me that this ordeal is done. If successful, I'll pass this information along to Apple support so they can figure out where the issue was.

SUCCESS!! That was the first successful iCloud backup of my phone in weeks. It's gonna be a pain to get everything back to how it was, but I might just use this opportunity to start fresh. I don't think I've done that since I started using iPhones with the 3GS. Never had trouble with iCloud over the years though. Hopefully this helps someone else out. If you've tried everything else and can't get it working, changing your password might and it's fairly painless. I can't say for sure whether it was the combination of the password and wiping the device from my iCloud, but just wiping the device didn't help. Only after I changed the password did iCloud backup work as it used to. The progress bar progressed as it should and the time remaining was accurate. Glad this is behind me.
