iCloud Backup Broken After iOS 9 Upgrade

iCloud Backup on both my iPhone and iPad have been working fine for years until I upgraded to iOS 9. After the upgrade it said my latest backup was "Never". When I pressed "Backup Now" the progress bar flashed quickly then went back to saying my latest backup was "Never" (no error messages).

I decided to try turning iCloud Backup off and back on again. When I try to turn in on it says "iCloud Backup Failed. There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup.".

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix?

iPhone 6, iOS 9

I have this problem too immediately after updating my iPad mini retina (model ME280LL/A) after upgrading to iOS 9.

previous version was 8.4.1

I have just completed a backup before the upgrade.

guess I better not update any of my other iDevices?

This is an major problem.

I poked around on the inter webs, and they were "not really deleted apps". Problem was/is you don't know what the offender was.

So, I checked the sizes against the sizes of all apps in iTunes, found several possible candidates.

a) Reseting the phone first, did not help

b) redownloaded the two best candidates, the ghosts were still there

c) Reset the phone, ghosts were gone

d) deleted the redownloaded apps (did this in Settings, don't know if it matters)

e) reset the phone

f) ghosts stayed gone

I spent 45 minutes on the phone with Apple yesterday. They told me that this is a known issue with iOS 9 and that they "anticipate" that the 9.0.1 update will resolve it. Unfortunately, for me, it did not. I spent another half-hour on the phone with them today and they are aware that the issue is still unresolved. What I was told is that this issue is one that appears to be random in what devices it will effect. In my home, we have an iPhone 5c and an iPhone 6. The 5c is able to successfully back up, but the 6 is not. I was told that they are working on a software update that will resolve the iCloud issue and that (as of the rep I spoke to yesterday), 9.0.2 is supposed to be the fix. I'm not holding my breath on that one, though. Now, I have an issue where the 5c has gotten so laggy that it's all but useless. Against my better judgment, we're about to upgrade it to a 6s, I think. :\

It seems Apple acknowledged that there is an issue with iCloud backups although indirectly. So its better that till the time its fixed we should take manual backups to iTunes.

---

App slicing is currently unavailable for iOS 9 apps due to an issue affecting iCloud backups created from iOS 9 where some apps from the App Store would only restore to the same model of iOS device.

iCloud backup works just fine with iOS 9. Again, the servers are inundated right now. You might get in during a lull, as I did a couple of hours ago, and the backup will occur without any issues. There is no need to mess around with your device, and downgrade the iOS. This is not an iOS-related issue. It is a capacity issue with the servers.

If everyone will just calm down and give it a couple more days, things will start to level out and will go back to normal.

Millions of people all trying to access and utilize the servers at the same time - it's a traffic jam. Time for a little Zen moment.... 🙂

Cheers,

With all due respect, Gail, upon what knowledge do you base this statement?

I work in IT, it is not rocket science to scale up computing resources these days. WORST case is 12 hours, and closer to three to get a whole new Java hosted infrastructure up and running. A properly-running environment does this dynamically with no downtime.

It is also easy enough to balance server loads when you KNOW when and how much data you are going to be pushing out to consumer devices. At the VERY least, one should get an email upon failure explaining the reason for the failure.

So I fall into the IOS9 issue camp.

(iPhone just got a notice of a 9.0.1 install available. Of the bug fixes, nothing was mentioned about iCloud. Irked.)

I had an apple tech directly receive info from my iPhone 6. iCloud backups worked fine both automatic and manual before the update. Once I updated to the new iOS it stopped working. He told me this is a memory issue. I have been able to successfully manually update an iCloud backup only once. I do not believe it is a server issue at all. Rather a new iOS issue.

FYI: 9.0.1 does fix the backup visibility problem for me. 9.0.1 now sees what was an "unsuccessful" backup yesterday with 9.0.0 and shows the proper decrease in quota. So I think backups were actually working in 9.0.0, but it couldn't see them. I also just did a manual 9.0.1 iCloud backup and it worked fine. So hopefully this is all history for everyone.
