Since the iOS 9 update I cannot clear any email notifications from the slide down notification centre if I have already read them, can anyone help? The clear button does nothing!

Same problem, 6s plus on 9.2.
Even turning notifications off completely for mail leaves the notifications behind in the notification centre,
Only a reboot clears them

I just noticed the same problem on my iPhone5 with iOS 9.3.1 - except the app was Podcast leaving 100's of "New episode is available for podcast {xyz}"
Pressing the X and Clear did nothing - but I did notice that all of the Timestamp entries for each notification began to blink rapidly. Plus the scroll up/down feature became very very slow until I closed the notification menu.
Another thread has a general workaround- which is to toggle the notification settings for "Group By" which has the side effect of clearing the notifications.
I had a similar problem where I could not clear Whatsapp and Messenger notifications from the Notification Centre.
Solution: Go to Settings > Notifications . Under Notifications View turn on the GROUP BY APP setting. The notifications can be cleared after that.
