Contact name missing from text message since iOS 9 upgrade

Contacts are saved but since the iOS 9 update, when I get a text message, no name appears only the telephone number in the notification screen? But I open the text, the name appears at the top, just when initial text notification comes through.

Bizarrely this only happens with a few people in my contact list.

I have tried a soft reset. Network settings reset and a re install of iOS 9.

I have also deleted the contact and re added them.

I have changed the number in the contact page as +44 7xxx xxxxxx, I have also changed it to 07xxx xxxxxx.

Nothing is working.

Is anyone having the same issues and if so are there any workable fixes. This is driving me insane.

I have an iphone 5s 16gb.

Thanks for your help.

Two years later and I ran into this problem on my iPhone 6 (which is 2-3 years old now). Anyways, my phone had a glitch where it was stuck on "searching..." instead of connecting to Verizon. I did a network reset and fixed that issue.

All of my contacts were messed up after, where they were saved but number showed xxxxxxxxxx instead of (xxx)xxx-xxx. Somehow this messed up the recognition in messages.

To fix this I went to settings, general, language and region, switched to Sweden region, clicked continue. Screen loaded for a few seconds. When it came back up I switched back to United States. Free this my numbers were switched back to the correct (xxx)xxx-xxxx

Hopefully this works for anyone else that experiences this later on down the road. I believe this works on Mac also but not sure.

I have the same problem. I phoned Apple Support. They told me to 'erase all setting' but it didn't work. They are calling me again later to see how I got on.

They don't seem terribly aware of the fact that so many people have this problem. They say that bugs can appear with a new update that's why they want to hear from their customers!!!! I told them to look at this website!

I reported this to Apple support actually. I was lucky enough to have someone that was familiar with the case with a victim with much more inconvenience to them than me. There is a work around that involves someone sending a message to you on the lock screen but opening the message in the client. I will post it once I get the instructions on this from them again.

I will have to say it is certainly not ideal having to do the above. I outright refused to erase and restore my phone was no guarantee that it would solve the problem. The other suggestion was resetting all settings in my phone, but that would mean I would have to reaasociate all the wifi hotspots I normally use. Either way I'm waiting patiently for this fix to come through.

There is a simple fix for this outlined in previous posts. It worked for me although it's not the most ideal way. All you have to do is to delete the messages from the person it's happening to. Delete the whole conversation. When they send you a new message, it will be fixed. I know you may have precious messages from this person or messages you want to keep. I suggest you screenshot them and save them that way then swipe left on the conversation and delete it. Simples.

I had same problem, just with my two most frequent texters. Deleted all my text history for those two contacts which helped for a while but problem now transferred to other senders too. Tried changing setting as per other suggestions and have set messages to only keep for one month. really frustrating. Using iphone 5s, ios9.1. So think twice before you delete all your text history!

I had this problem on my iPhone 5 after upgrading to iOS 9 and again on my new 6s. What I've found is that any contacts using iMessage show the contact name on the lock screen or the pop up message. Anyone texting from a non Apple phone so using SMS shows as a number on lock screen and pop up. However everyone shows up correctly with their names in the conversation thread when I go into messages.

norhing suggested has worked to change that, but at least I can identify which are the numbers causing the problem and kind of why

Yes, my problem too. I have a brand new iphone 5s - bought out of my hard earned cash. I've tried everything - all the tips recommended by other users and even a very long day conversing with the Apple Support help desk. Many solutions were tried - every setting tweeked and even a full reboot - but no luck. My 'problem' was escalated through four sets of hierarchy (with me having to re-explain the issue at each step - grrrr) and finally I was transferred to a very helpful woman (Angela Breen, iOS Senior Advisor, UK & Ireland) who initially assured me that my problem would be solved with her help - I just had to be patient ... A week later she advised me that she had discovered that my problem was a 'known issue' and the tech people were working on a solution and to expect an update at any time. You can imagine my excitement about installing iOS 9.2.1 and my subsequent disappointment that I'm still left with the same problem. I feel very disappointed and frustrated.

I'm also having this issue since I updated my iPhone 5 from 8.4.1 to iOS9. Not all contacts but a few are showing as mobile number instead of their name. I have turned off iCloud contacts and used my Gmail contacts, turned off Dial Assist, rebooted phone, restored from backup, still no joy. I really hope Apple solve this issue.
