Yes, tt's a scam. They're banking on the fact that many people are ashamed of looking at certain web sites. The scam plays on their guilt to get them to pay money.

Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History and Website Data. And, of course, don't give them any money. Personally, I'd try to avoid sites that have those pop ups. There are lots of other adult websites out there. 😁

You can't prevent them completely. You can avoid sites that have been a problem in the past. You can avoid the sorts of sites that are more likely to have them ("adult" sites are a big culprit). Just remember not to panic when you see messages like that.

Unfortunately, the list of sites that have served malware-laced ads isn't just the questionable ones. In the past few weeks they've included Forbes, The NY Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time magazine, Huffington Post and a number of others. These weren't scam ads as much as ads that download malware (including ransomware) if you click on them. Supposedly the sites aren't to blame; it's the ad brokers, but these include Google. Which adds more ammunition to the ad blocker argument.

Fortunately, I believe I can be a lady and still know what I know. 😎

I wholeheartedly agree. 🙂

Right. Please read Phony "tech support" / "ransomware" popups and web pages.

There are far more important things to worry about. Since you can't do anything about most of them anyway, just stop worrying and enjoy yourself.

This icky scam recently popped up in a new tab on my Macbook chrome as well. I was able to shut it down, and move on with my life; however, I want to clarify that the "bad guys" do not have access to my hard-drive or can obtain usernames/passwords/personal info I enter while using the internet (i.e. email, banking)? I understand that it was been asked before, however just wanted to confirm that it is not something that is running in the background that I am unaware of...

I do not believe so. I forced quit Chrome --> Computer refused to shut down bc chrome was quit incorrectly --> I uninstalled Chrome --> Computer still refused to shut down --> Reinstalled Chrome --> Held down power button/shut down --> Upon restarting, everything was back to normal.

I did not click anywhere on the ransomware page at any time
