My 2011 iMac won't wake from sleep mode

Hi all

I've recently had problems waking my iMac from sleep mode. This appears to happen more often when the sleep period is prolonged, ie. 2+ hours. I can't even wake the computer using a brief press on the power button, I have to hold in the power button and force the Mac to shut down and then restart it. This is obviously not doing the Mac any good so I would really like to know what's causing this problem suddenly (ironically, this problem appeared to coincide with my extended warranty expiring!!).

I have recently reset the SMC, PRAM and NVRAM during a support call to Apple for another long-term ongoing issue I've had since upgrading to Yosemite, so I know that's been done and presumably shouldn't need doing again.

I also read that in the past, this problem has been experienced by people using a powered hub - I had a hub connected which I've now disconnected but the problem is still happening.

I've also booted into Safe Mode and run disk utility, verify disk permissions and no problems were reported.

The iMac is a mid-2011 21.5", running Yosemite 10.10.5 with 8GB of RAM and 500GB HDD of which there is 271GB free space. I have a WD 1TB external HDD set up as a Time Machine backup connected via FireWire.

I would really appreciate some help with this - thanks in advance.

Reset the SMC and PRAM each 2-3 times back to back using the instructions in Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. Then retest.

If the problem persists please reply with an EtreCheck report of your system and we can look for obvious issues.

As a general rule of thumb, NEVER upgrade any OS unless it is working perfectly to begin with. Upgrading a OS that isn't working okay makes troubleshooting problems ever more difficult to detect.

Thanks for the advice. I will try out the SMC and PRAM checks again as you suggest and see if it resolves the problem and will let you know. I have EtreCheck installed so I can do a report. I have checked Console and it is telling me that there is a an error showing as:

21/09/2015 08:29:05.750 powerd[50]: com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.sleep.failure

com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure

com.apple.message.summarize: YES

SenderMachUUID: D88AA2E5-ABBC-3B2B-B53C-17A92A95F274

I don't know if that is relevant?

For your info, I did the upgrade when Yosemite was first released and I was using Mavericks at the time, which was working perfectly.

Thanks again

Hi

I upgraded to Yosemite when it was first released and ever since I have had a problem with Safari freezing or crashing - usually and more typically, on the first use after it's been idle for a while. The blue progress bar gets to around an eighth of the way across and then stops - then the spinning beachball appears and very often the only resolution is to Force Quit Safari and try again. More often than not this usually works, but I can almost guarantee that Safari will have this problem at least once every day. I have put in MANY support calls to Apple regarding this and this has resulted in 3 repeat installs of the OS, numerous resets of the SMC/PRAM and they basically scratch their heads and walk away. I just keep hoping that the next update will fix it..... but no luck so far.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Please post the complete Etrecheck report, posting just an error report doesn't tell too much except to confirm what we already know.

Sep 22, 2015 3:35 AM in response to Linc Davis

Hi Linc

Just to let you know what I did and what has happened so far in respect of Safari freezing.

1. Firstly I tried using Safari whilst logged in as Guest User and I couldn't get the problem to manifest itself.

2. I followed your instructions to remove all peripherals and logged in to my own user account in Safe Mode.

3. The problem did eventually appear, even in Safe Mode.

4. I shut down and reattached all peripherals and rebooted the Mac this morning in normal mode.

5. So far, I have been unable to recreate the problem but I will monitor it for a few days and let you know if it returns.

If it is 'cured', what do you think may have been/be the problem?

Thanks for your help.

Hi there

I have followed your instructions for resetting the SMC and PRAM three times consecutively this morning. I shall wait to see if this has resolved the issue and let you know as it usually requires the Mac to be in sleep mode for at least a couple of hours.

I have also run an EtreCheck report now as the system stands - do you want to see that? Or only if the problem recurs?

Thanks again for your help.

Hi there

Really thought this problem had disappeared but it's happened twice again yesterday, the iMac wouldn't wake from sleep and I had to force a shutdown and reboot on both occasions.

So this morning I ran the Etre Check and here is the report:

Unfortunately you have made a bit of a mess on your computer. You have installed antivirus software which is 100% unnecessary and possibly the cause of the problem. OS X does not need any antivirus, cleaning or other third party tools to maintain itself. There are no virues for OS X, however there is a small amount of malware which is very easily avoided by:

  • Do not use a torrent to download anything
  • Keep OS X up-to-date
  • If you get an ad, pop-up, e-mail or phone call advising your computer has been compromised, these are all SCAMS!

Also you have installed worthless WD software on your computer, uninstall it immediately.

Once you have uninstalled the antivirus & WD software run another EtreCheck report and post it and we will look for any other issues and confirm the apps are now gone.

Good luck.

Hi

Thanks for responding. Where does it say that I have installed anti-virus software? The only AV I have is ClamXav but I can't see that on the report. I can certainly uninstall it but I've had that on the system for over 2 years and it has never caused a problem so far. Also, I deliberately did not install any of the Western Digital software that came with my drive - I do see references to WD software but it is in my Documents/Manuals folder and is not actually installed. Do I need to delete the documents? I do have Ad Block Plus on the computer because the ads on websites are incredibly annoying and really slow down my internet usage - does this software really cause problems and is there no other way round ads on websites?

Thanks again!!

Donna
