ios9 update -> now touchscreen problems

Ever since I updated to ios 9, my iphone 5s touchscreen is acting crazy. The accuracy of where I touch or slide vs. what the iphone thinks I did is completely off. The phone seems to have a mind of its own too, it starts opening apps and stuff when I'm not even touching it. Then other times it freezes completely for 5-10 minutes. It is nearly impossible to shut it off because it won't swipe when I initiate the turn off screen. The home button works fine. Every once in a while the phone will act normal for like 15 minutes and then it goes crazy again!! Anyone else?? This just started a couple days ago after I did the ios 9 update.

Hi beecccca,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the iPhone can't be powered off and the touchscreen is opening apps on its own. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

If the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond to touch - Apple Support

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

To force restart your device, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home button for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Cheers

Just got off of chat with Apple support. Like many others here, they told me it was a "hardware problem", and that I'd have to take it to an authorized service center for repair or replacement. "Hardware problem"... I wonder what that's a euphemism for? They designed the hardware in this particular revision of iPhone and neglected to find a way to develop iOS 9 for this revision? Failed to QC on this revision and didn't realize that 9 breaks certain handsets? Dunno. Pretty irritating that I have to waste my day and go a likely undetermined amount of time while they decide whether to repair or replace my phone. Not going to be easy, my job has several apps that are iOS based as well as my need to be contactable or reach certain people as part of my job for operational reasons.

Not cool.

If your phone is out of warranty, they'll probably charge you a fee for repair replacement. My cost was $160 for replacement. They may have told you in chat, that it would be free, but don't expect it to be. Wt this newest update, I have lost entire respect for apple. I was a 30 year owner, of their products, going back to the Apple IIe, which I learned how to use in grade school.

OK, guys. It's Sunday, 11/8. I get a call. It's Jonathan from Apple toady and he asks me to send them my iPhone 6+ so they can figure out what's wrong. They're actually going to send me a replacement, and I will send them my iPhone so they can see firsthand what's going on with it. He's certain it's a firmware issue, but they ARE looking at this problem, and they ARE taking action to deal with my problem. Jonathan was surprised that the genius bar guy didn't actually replace my phone, which might well have fixed my problem, but I'm happy to a) finally get attention about this problem, and b) get a replacement phone through this process. It's been frustrating, and annoying, But there's hope. If you still are having this problem, it sounds like Apple IS paying attention to this, and it sounds like they should replace your phone with one whose firmware does NOT have this problem, especially if you're covered under Applecare or a current warranty. I've veered from so completely frustrated to so pleased that I'm being heard and they're looking into this problem. There's hope. If, for some reason, the replacement phone doesn't come and my problems continue, I will post an update, but I'm expecting this to return to normal, where I'm so happy to have my huge iPhone for calls, Kindle, Chrome, email ...

Jonathan contacted me as well, we keep missing each other but I'm hoping that he's able to make sense or do something for all of this.

On friday I had another chat with Apple Support who told me that it's a hardware issue and they haven't heard of any issues with the touch screen at all (hard to believe). So AGAIN I took the phone to the Genius bar, because now there are articles out about this problem I was hoping someone from Apple may have caught on.

At the Genius Bar the manager told me that pretty much everyone is bringing their phones in with the touch screen issue and that they were going to wipe my phone and reinstall the iOS. This didn't work OF COURSE! (duh) after having an engineer check the phone for physical/water damage that they couldn't find. they proceeded to tell me there was an issue with my touchscreen, when I asked them to point out the damage they told me that it wasn't physical (yeah, sure.) They told me that they'd replace the screen for 130. I asked them how they could charge me 130 to replace the screen that they aren't even sure is the problem and they said "It's called troubleshooting" So it's going to cost me 130 for Apple to trouble shoot their own nonfunctional product. I walked out, & now I'm waiting to see what Jonathan will have to say, hopefully something that isn't as ridiculous as all the employees I've been dealing with.

Hi

i wen.t the same path at the apple store a few week ago. I paid them for their error. I’m supporting a few apple product in the Family, friend and at work since I work in I.T. my recommendation to them is don't touch ios 9, don't touch apple until further notice (if it is urgent go Elsewhere). They have to fix their support. It is normal to have a bad release sometime but it is not allowed to acknowledge their error. I’m still ****** that I had to pay for a new screen caused by an IOS Release

I didn’t have the chance to wait for apple to wake up, so I paid. I needed a new ipad, Won’t be a Ipad

I have this same issue. I just came back from the apple genius bar appointment in the south shore mall at braintree. They told me i have to $329 to have the phone replace. They tech didn't even run any diagnostics or anything. I mentioned that he should take a look at this thread and said that it's only a few hundred people which is small percentage. VERY RUDE! they said it is a hardware issue and even if it was a software issue related to IOS 9 I still have to pay the 329 for the new phone UNLESS apple comes out and says that it is their fault. The same thing is also happening to my wife phone after updated to IOS 9. VERY disappointed with apple. I though this type of thing didn't happen with them. I may have to go to the samsung galaxy family.

There's obviously something wrong with ios9. Had my "6" since last December and no problems until 9 was released. 2 weeks ago the screen went black all of a sudden and had to be replaced at the Apple store.Only a couple days before I had upgraded to ios 9.1. The "Genius'" determined a hardware failure and I was good to go. Interesting the store was packed with customers having problems/issues. Anyway the phone was responsive (running on 8.4) until I restored with the updated ios9 from my computer, then the 'screen freeze' began. Thought it might be an app that I'd installed so I did a complete reset deleting all info, but the problem persisted. Gotta be the software.

So I moved my sim card to a Blackberry Q10...and the "ol' girl" is pumping right along. Doesn't have all the apps I want but it works...is reliable and can't be hacked. Pretty sure Steve Jobs is spinning in his grave right now!

Come on Apple...put your "Geniuses" to work and fix it!

Until then long live the Blackberry!

It's not only iOS9. I still have iOS 8 and my touchscreen goes nuts regularly. I was on the phone today and the phone screen disappeared, a text page popped up and some gremlin was wildly typing gibberish on the screen. Other times I can't unlock my phone. Sometimes when I'm texting, the gremlin starts inserting text and the text page starts scrolling up and down.

I am curious whether any of you following this discussion have looked at the new "feature" in iOS 9 called "Touch Accommodations"?

It is under Settings/General/Accessibility/Touch Accommodation. When I read the descriptions of the 3 settings, it makes me wonder if this may be causing my problems. I had no problems with my iPhone 5s prior to iOS 9. My issues started with the iOS 9 update. They include touch screen not accepting inputs when I try to unlock my phone, phantom touches that open apps, jumping around, fragmenting of texts and slow reactions to touch inputs.

This is in addition to the fact that my email app no longer works for POP mail, but that is a whole different group of discussions on the Support Forum.
