Hi Bugsington,
I see that you are experiencing an issue where your text entry field in the Messages app is being obscured by a gray bar. I would like to suggest that you first update to iOS 9.0.1, which was released today, and see if the issue is resolved by this update. If the issue is still present, you should go to your Messages settings and toggle the “Show Subject Field” setting. Simply turning this on, returning to your Messages app, then returning to the Settings to turn off the field again should resolve the issue:

My iPhone 5s has the same fault, very frustrating.
I am, as always, fully updated.
Hopefully Apple fixes this soon.
i did not have the raise to listen option either when i first looked ( i have iphone 5) I noticed my imessage was not activated and when i clicked to reactivate imessage the "raise to listen " option was then available . I dont know if this would be the same for the iphone 6 just wanted to share that bit of info .
I have an iPhone 6. I found the "Raise to Listen" option by turning on the iMessage option at the top of the screen. Activating iMessage, revealed several other settings including the "Raise to Listen" one. You should be able to toggle off "Raise to Listen" and then toggle iMessage back off.
I believe Apple needs to fix this. All solutions offered appear to be temporary only. The problem persists and we should not have to toggle the “Show Subject Field” setting to make the bug go away. Temporary fixes include toggling the character count On and/or Off in Settings > Messages and closing other apps such as Camera before returning to text message.

I too have had this issue after the updates. This fix is only temporary. The gray box will come back while I am texting someone. This is horrible and worse than annoying. I am losing faith in Apple.

Here, here! C'mon Apple. Let's get a fix. Wish I could undo this update. Doesn't appear to be any pluses and a lot of minuses.
Audio Box in texting field fix
Hit settings …
Scroll down till you find Messages
In the Messages scroll down
till you see Raise to Listen
Switch this to off.
This should take care of the Audio message box in the texting field
I updated to 9.0.2 and am still having this issue.
Thank you Tide1990, but as I've stated before, I have the iPhone 4 and it does not have a "Raise to Listen" function in "Messages" menu to toggle it on or off.
My frustration continues with this grey bar.....
