Hi Bugsington,
I see that you are experiencing an issue where your text entry field in the Messages app is being obscured by a gray bar. I would like to suggest that you first update to iOS 9.0.1, which was released today, and see if the issue is resolved by this update. If the issue is still present, you should go to your Messages settings and toggle the “Show Subject Field” setting. Simply turning this on, returning to your Messages app, then returning to the Settings to turn off the field again should resolve the issue:

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!
Great points to keep in mind, needing a platform that can work equally for A and B and this could be a scientific approach to weaving commonality in all environments, a direct approach. I am new to such discussions and find all these participants to be high caliber genius level that may not be in the setting to maximize potential. Threads such as the one I stumbled on to here, could be a reverse concept of string theory. Keeping cells on awake mode rather than hibernate could trigger the ultimate payout that I look for, so that each cell rather than operating on fragmented technologies, is able to receiver a specific portion from the payload that is fueling all noises and bugs in any system.
Here, here socratesPmelbourne!
Couldn't agree more! Enough with the "work-arounds" already, just fix it Apple!
This grey box is the most ridiculous, pointless, annoying feature ever! Who sees any value in it whatsoever?
Get rid of it!!!
So ready to go back to the android.....
This is friggin ridiculous! Keeps happening in the middle of a text conversation and completely blocks the input screen so you can't tell if you've even typed anything. My "lift to listen" was already turned off. I've used nothing but iPhones since my 3GS and I'm thinking this 6S I just bought will be the last one. Crap!
If you don't have iMessages turned on, you won't see the "Raise to Listen" option. Turn iMessages on, the menu items will change and the "Raise to Listen" option will be available. Turn it off, then turn iMessages off and you're good to go.
This keeps happening to me as well. Not just once, but it has happened repeatedly. I go to settings/messages and toggle off and on subject field. It clears up for a while then returns in a day or so. Is there a permanent fix? Is there an update that is going to fix this?
This did it - thanks for the time!!
Thank you so much. It was quite irritating yet easy to fix.
Finally someone who knows, Thanks
Just curious. How did you figure out the fix for the grayed area in the text box?
Well, well.....how ironic! I've been prompted to update to iOS 9.0.2 !!!!
Let's see what new hurdles we'll have this go around...
IOS 9.0.2 Does not have the issues listed. hope they make IOS 9.0.3 with this bug improvement.
This worked like a charm!! Thank you
I test issues on my iPhone and iPad and learn the fix by causing the issue then going down the list of solutions I have written down.
I do not work at apple. I Represent apple.
IOs9 is a catastrophy
