Apps Stuck Updating after iOS 9

I have noticed every day since I have updated iPad Air / 64G to iOS 9 - I find some pre-existing app stuck attempting to update itself. i have done some research and tried everything but it keeps happening. Only reboot iPad seems to clear it up until the next one gets stuck. Oddly enough others update fine, there is no rhyme or reason to which ones get stuck.


Anyone have any idea what's going on and/or how to fix it?

I suggest that you try this out:

Remember before you try these to turn off Find My iPhone/iPad/iPod.

Make a backup before you try these.

(Settings>>iCloud>>Find My iDevice>>Toggle Off)

•Reboot (Hold home button and sleep button down for 10 seconds)

•Restore From Backup

•Restore As New (This will delete all the content on the device).

iOS 9 Freeze

There is a bug when updating from iOS 7 to iOS 9 (Skipping iOS 8). Luckily it is easy to fix!

Here is Apple’s suggested fix: If the Slide to Upgrade screen won't go away after you update to iOS 9 - Apple Support.

Step 1 - Backup your device (This will save things like photos, text messages, etc).

Step 2 - Download iOS 8.4.1 for your iPhone or iPad.

Step 3 - Reboot phone into DFU mode - hold down the sleep/wake button and home button - when it reboots let go of power button - still hold home button

At this point it will ask you to connect your phone to iTunes - will have to connect phone to the computer.

Step 4 - Hold down the Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) and and then click restore.

Step 5 - Browse to the 8.4.1 file you downloaded and select it. This should restore to the previous IOS version. Note: This will wipe phone.

Step 6 - Restore from backup. Hope that you backed up before attempting to update.

Step 7 - Download and install iOS 9.

Thanks for your detailed description, but I am not a big fan of nuking devices unless absolutely necessary. Since this is occurring on both my iPad Air and iPhone 6 I can pretty safely rule out a problem on a single device requiring a nuke. It is still occurring to this day. every day a new set of previous installed apps trying to update and getting stuck.

This remains an ongoing problem on both an iPad Air and iPhone 6. Random apps get stuck updating and do far the only solution that works a percentage of the time is hard reboot. I have probably done more hard reboot in the last week that in the entire time I have owned iPhones. Both devices have even been updating with latest OS update.

I have the same problem. So far the only fix is time consuming. You have to try to delete the stuck app (which won't work), then turn off and turn on the phone (this actually makes the app disappear), then go to the app store and re-install that app, then drag it back to where you had it before (i.e folder or certain home screen page).


I am doing this almost every other day. The worst thing so far is the lack of attention this is getting from both Apple and the news media. I have submitted this problem to Apple twice already with no response.


The other option is to not update your apps and make sure auto-update is turned off.

TThat is the exact scenario I am facing day after day. It does seem to be getting less frequent the further we get away from iOS 9 adoption date, but it is still happening. Much like you I don't understand why this is so low under the radar for Apple. For me it was a HUGE milestone - up until this started happening I had NEVER lost any data on any iDevice. I had 100% trust in my iDevices. Now I'm not so sure.

Thas been happening to me as well.


2 solutions that worked for me;


  1. If you can't delete the app normally, go to settings / usage / stuck app and delete from there. Reinstall.
  2. Alternatively, reset network settings. Settings / general / reset / reset network settings. You'll have to reenter your WiFi passwords, but this cleared the problem for me.

Two months out from iOS 9 install and the problem still exists. Case in point:


1. Yesterday noticed Scanbot stuck updating on iPad. has updated several times with no issue since iOS 9 update.

2. Reboot iPad to clear error.

3. Upon reboot - Scanbot app is GONE!


THat is what I call "data loss" - the app that was working before, is now gone. Whatever happened to download, verify, install, replace of past iOS. If the install fails (in this case because I rebooted) then I should have suffered no data loss.


THe base problem of all this though is why are the apps still getting stuck updating on both my iPad Air and iPhone 6?

Similar problem here including the scanbot app. I have always found that when an app disappears as you mentioned I can always restore it from my purchased list. Apple stated in the 9.1 update that 9.1 corrected the app update problem so it is interesting that you note it still occurs after you have updated to 9.1? I am unable to update to 9.1 from 9.0.2 because of the 'unable to install error' which also appears to be a glitch that I sure hope Apple corrects as quickly as possible. So far as I am aware there are no impending updates coming before 9.2 but it sure would be nice to have an intermediate update that concentrates solely on fixing these two stubborn problems with 9.1 installation and app updating.

Just to make sure as you probably are aware you can retrieve these apps from the app store in your purchased list. The app that disappeared after updating will now appear in the purchase list with a cloud icon and arrow and when you tap this the icon changes to update and wHen you tap this the app will update correctly and any associated data should still be intact. This is certainly a nuisance that Apple needs to address as well as the failed to up date 9.1 error that other people are also experiencing.

I Finally got updated to 9.1 using iTunes on a laptop. This even restored free memory storage I had lost somewhere between 9.0.1 and 9.0.2....went from 6.4 GB to 18.6GB free memory storage after iTunes upgrade to 9.1. So touch wood, my App Update Stall glitch also appears to be fixed..but not sure if this is because of 9.1 or because I changed my DNS servers to the Google Public servers (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) as suggested by prior thread? You might want to try all of this? Sure hope something works for you!

Same problem with iOS 9.1 and iPad 3, had this problem since iOS 9, also tried a complete reset but also now I have one app in "install" mode since 24 hours and I cannot remove it from the desktop, I can only reboot the device and then, maybe I'll find it in my app list, otherwise search for it in the App Store and reinstall it, after reinstalling it I can find my old settings.

very annoying bug.

This has been happening to me quite a bit with my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6s running the newest OS.


I end up having to stop the update if I can, reboot the device, delete the app, find it in the App Store and re-install it. This has happened with all kinds of apps, and some are even repeat offenders with new updates.


It's getting very frustrating, and since it's two completely separate devices, there is no way I'm going to wipe them and setup as new devices and spend all the time going through setting things up and moving data around. If it's on two devices, it has to be the OS / store - not the devices themselves.
