Q: Apple applied for a loan in my name?

Apple applied for a loan in my name in the apple store. I went in to sign up for the upgrade plan. I handed the sales person my credit card and ID. He asked me for my SSN. I asked if he was pulling my credit and he responded NO. I then said if you are pulling my credit I don't want to sign up for the plan. I explained that I am applying for a loan to buy a commercial property and I was told not to let anyone run my credit. He replied, No this is not checking your credit. So I gave him my SSN. Ten seconds later he said the amount I was trying to pay exceeded the limit. I showed him my credit card statement on the app the card company uses and the available credit was 9k. I said you must have done something wrong!! He said no its from Citizens Bank, or whatever bank apple uses. He said they denied you. At this point I asked what the **** is going on? I got an email saying I applied for a loan. A loan for $1000+ and I assume I was denied for the loan. My credit score is  better than average but they did a hard pull on my credit for a phone without my consent. Nobody will return my calls. I called the apple store and they gave me a number to call. I was forwarded to a voice mail box over and over and never got a call back. I need an email address so I can file my complaint and see if they can contact the credit agencies to fix this problem. I am going to file a complaint with the Virginia State Corporation Commission Monday. If anyone has any information that can help me please forward me the email or phone number for someone who can help me. I need this resolved before mid October.

Thanks in advance

    Apple is not here.

These forums are supported by users like yourself who have nothing at all to do credit.

I suggest you use the Contact Us icon on the lower right hand corner of the page and talk to Apple from there.

This sounds like you need to talk with the Apple Store Manager - In Person. You have written here in a very businesslike manner. Continuing in that manner - while being assertive may get results, especially if you are standing in the crowded Store

Take a look at http://www.apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-upgrade-program, in particular the small print at the bottom of the page.

    1. The iPhone Upgrade Program is available to qualified customers only with a valid U.S. personal credit card. Requires a 24-month installment loan with a 0% Annual Percentage Rate from Citizens Bank, N.A. (subject to any interest, fees, or other costs payable to the issuer of the credit card), purchase of AppleCare+, and iPhone activation with a national carrier — AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, or Verizon. Full terms apply

It would seem clear that a loan is required to underwrite the upgrade program.

The iPhone upgrade plan involves a third party (Citizens Bank) and a loan from them. Apple only processed the paperwork for you. There is no way around the fact that you are indeed applying for a loan with Citizens Bank and must be eligible according to their rules. There is also no question that you need to provide your SSN (among other things).

If you do not like or agree with those published terms, you won't be able to participate in that program as Apple has made the requirements clear. The store employee should have mentioned that - most likely - Apple is not doing a credit check, but the bank extending the loan most likely would.

As for the loan, I would guess that you will need to address that with Citizens Bank.

It would be nice if the employees at apple made it clear that it is financing through a third party. Not an upgrade program sold by apple. Who finances a phone anyway? I've always paid for my phones up front and was very confused by the "up grade program". And my credit is better than average. I financed a Mercedes Benz at 0%? I feel like this transaction was illegal considering I was told that I wasn't having my credit pulled, or that I was applying for a loan, and I never signed or agreed to a credit check. The point is Apple sales staff has an obligation to be upfront with the customer. The fine print should be bold print if it involves pulling a hard credit report. Especially if the customer makes it clear that they do not want their credit report pulled. I find it dishonest and I really wish Apple had a way to voice complaints. I have spoken with the store manager and have been completely blown off. It's not easy for me to just forget about this because I've applied for a loan to buy a commercial property and this will really effect my chances of it going through.

These documents were not at the apple store and if they were they didn't share them with 20 or so people who ended up paying for the phone up front. The plan was offered to people in line. Most people who wanted the upgrade program decided on the spot. No mention to anyone about third party loans. I have found several other websites complaining about the same thing. I'm hopeful that someone has had better luck than me. Thank you very much for responding to my post.

Consumers do still need to do their own research (caveat emptor always applies) - I tend to check everything before I make a decision. In this case, I had already decided that I am not interested in a "forced upon me" loan; I do not do loans, so this program is not something I'd ever be interested in.

No I think that Apple needs to know that their employees are misleading customers.

I heard about 2 lies while trying to buy an iPhone today. It wasted 2.5 hrs of my time.

I'd like to add that my Apple sales man was pushy and rushing me. He barely gave me time to read anything!

I usually find that walking towards the door when salesmen get too pushy to suit me gets their attention. Nothing they are selling is important enough to put up with a rude salesman.

I did that after getting a refund. Apple Corporate still needs to know what is going on at their stores. Hence I'm posting.

Apple corporate will never see either one of your complaints so you wasted your post.

The only Apple employees that are here - beyond the community specialists that post links to articles to unanswered threads - are the hosts. And their only interaction with general forum members is to police and enforce the rules of the forum.

They will not respond to you here.  Like the others have said, work on contracting corporate and talk to them.

While folks here can certainly sympathize with what happened, there's nothing anyone here can do beyond commiserate.
