Apple applied for a loan in my name?

Apple applied for a loan in my name in the apple store. I went in to sign up for the upgrade plan. I handed the sales person my credit card and ID. He asked me for my SSN. I asked if he was pulling my credit and he responded NO. I then said if you are pulling my credit I don't want to sign up for the plan. I explained that I am applying for a loan to buy a commercial property and I was told not to let anyone run my credit. He replied, No this is not checking your credit. So I gave him my SSN. Ten seconds later he said the amount I was trying to pay exceeded the limit. I showed him my credit card statement on the app the card company uses and the available credit was 9k. I said you must have done something wrong!! He said no its from Citizens Bank, or whatever bank apple uses. He said they denied you. At this point I asked what the **** is going on? I got an email saying I applied for a loan. A loan for $1000+ and I assume I was denied for the loan. My credit score is better than average but they did a hard pull on my credit for a phone without my consent. Nobody will return my calls. I called the apple store and they gave me a number to call. I was forwarded to a voice mail box over and over and never got a call back. I need an email address so I can file my complaint and see if they can contact the credit agencies to fix this problem. I am going to file a complaint with the Virginia State Corporation Commission Monday. If anyone has any information that can help me please forward me the email or phone number for someone who can help me. I need this resolved before mid October.

Thanks in advance

Apple is not here.

I have a pay by the month cell phone plan and bought my own phone and they still ran a credit check.

I would say... even if you went into a car dealer and slapped down cash for a new car... they're going to pull a credit check.

Sky: no doubt. They wanna know if you will be 'worth the trouble' of signing you up and maintaining your account

David: I'll bet not... cash & carry > then the warranty is on the manufacturer.

To whom it may concern:

  • any employer will run a credit check on you when you apply for a job - BEFORE you get the interview
  • a hospital MAY run you before a scheduled surgery - even if you have insurance (they wanna know if they can keep getting $$ after your insurance runs out)
  • I have it on good authority (a mortgage broker) that too much credit checking will harm your credit rating (what 'too much' is - is closely held by the rating services)

It's also a way to know if they're dealing with 'you' or someone pretending to be you. Do addresses match, does other info match, etc.

Mine is set now so that no new credit can be opened in my name without them calling a number to verify that yeah, I want it. So, theoretically, if someone stole my credit card and is trying to fraudulently get a phone, they shouldn't be able to do that. Which protects me and protects Apple from taking a loss on the phone that is being stolen from them

LifeLock, amigo!

I am pretty sure that for CC purchases, all Apple must do is go by the CC issuers policies on verifying idents, then the CC issuer is liable (and insured) against the bad guys.

The "loan" deal is likely much the same... underwriter makes policy, Apple follows policy, loan goes bad - underwriter eats it or claims it on their insurance - remember "AIG" = insurance on loans
