Large graphic novels crash iBooks in iOS 9

I have been having issues with 2 omnibus graphic novels (over 500 pages) that iBooks in iOS 9 is unable to handle.

After a certain page, if I go to the next page it will crash to the home screen. If my page is set to a higher page, it will crash on open, though if I change the page on a Mac and let it sync, it will load the earlier page.

I have tried everything from logging out of iTunes, to side-loading the books from iTunes on my Mac. The issue persists after I restored from an iTunes backup for a different issue. Updating to iOS 9.0.1 increased the page I was able to get to, though after using multitasking while opening the book, it crashed and again crashes on lower pages.

One of the books is a manga (read right to left) and the other is an American graphic novel and either way it crashes on the higher page number.

IOS 9 and it's update ...absolutely DO NOT work on my Ipad for a large image-heavy Ibook. I created a 500 page fixed layout Epub 3 (FXL Epub 3) that seamlessly opens and works in IOS 8. But this new OS won't even OPEN the book. So this is a big problem for authors and readers alike.

Apple....please FIX THIS IMMEDIATELY. There are many graphic novel readers. And nothing is more frustrating than to have something that worked fine....and no longer does in an "improved" upgrade. If you want to see a sample of what is crashing, just ask

Thank you-

Apparently publishers are pulling their large ebooks from the iBooks store over this. After I opened a problem, went thru the usual 'must be your computer' nonsense, they deflected me to the publisher, who explained the issue, how it has been known to break existing ebook files with no chance of redownloading, and their decision to pull all large fixed image ebooks from the store. Seems the dwindling revenue on both the publisher and Apple's side should motivate a permanent fix quickly.

Had no idea this was an issue until my copy of The Walking Dead: Compendium One crashed the other day. Unfortunately it was past the 2 week return date. Deleted and re-downloaded it a million times, to no avail. Every other book in my library works, and surprise, they're all under 400 pages. Apple Support managed to get iBooks to open the book again, but iBooks crashed the second I attempted to turn the page and hasn't opened The Walking Dead since. It's interesting that a second Apple Support employee didn't seem to believe that the issue was related to 400+ pages, I made sure to note on my MacBook (where the book works fine) that the last page I'd read on my iPhone prior to the first crash was page 414.

It was beyond discouraging to find that this issue has been known for months now with no sign that Apple intends to fix it. I did manage to get my money refunded, and I'll be donating it to Barnes & Noble for a functioning copy of the first compendium, I've yet to have a paper book refuse to open.

Same issue here, I actually got through the entire compendium one with no problems, but as soon as I get to page 400 in compendium 2 it keeps crashing. But, if I skip to page 520 the book starts working again on my IPad. So for those of you that own a Mac, I just read the book on my iMac to page 530 and then I was able to switch back to my IPad. Its a bit of a work around, but has proven to be useful for me so far.

I hope this helps!

Yes. 9.2 seems to be working a bit better. I've tried it on my iPad so far. Haven't tried on iPhone. Definitely got past page 400. I'm currently up to page 900'ish on Compendium 2 with no crashes. However, most of the time prior to 9.2 a soft reset would let the book read past 400 without crashing until a few re-loads of iBooks, then would crash again. I had to work last night, so didn't have time to play around, but I'll investigate a bit more today with the iPad and iPhone.

Still not buying Compendium 3 yet, due to uncertainty.

I finally got through to Apple this week and after explaining the issue multiple times to multiple levels of Support (and not getting any refunds due to purchasing the books more than 90 days ago...), they finally said they would "escalate" the issue up to the engineers. The Support people were very nice, but all 4 of the people I spoke with had no idea about this problem....

Confirmed! 9.2 seems to fix the issue. I've made it through all of Compendium 2 (1000+ pages) after multiple power up/down cycles and close/reopen of iBooks with my iPad 2. No crashes. Book worked fine. I've also tested with my iPhone 6 without any problems, although not quite as much testing.

curious if others have had the same success?

Now I need to bite the bullet and purchase/download Compendium 3 as a Guinea pig.....
