Advice: Do not update iPad 3 to iOS 9. Problems! Lag!

I updated my iPad 3 to iOS 9 yesterday (and downgraded today; thankfully Apple is still signing iOS 8.4.1).

Some background info: all of my apps were updated prior to me updating to iOS 9. I had 23 GB of free space on my 64 GB device. Mine is an iPad 3 wifi only. I have a fast broadband internet connection.

I experienced the following problems after upgrading to iOS 9: I play a lot of games on my iPad 3. Games like Hearthstone were extremely laggy on iOS 9. My turns would often end before the animations ended and before I had finished playing my turn. Everything took noticeably longer, whether it was looking at my cards, finding a matchup, etc. I got disconnected from the game a few times. Other games and apps were also affected with lag. I would make a selection and nothing would happen until a few seconds later.

I tried the following fixes to no avail to see if they would help speed up games and apps on my iPad 3 under iOS 9: 1. Turned off Background App refresh; 2. Turned off all notifications; 3. Checking email set to manual; 4. Under Settings/Accessibility/Reduce Motion - turned off Reduce Motion; 5. Under Settings/Accessibility/Increase Contract/Reduce Transparency - turned off Reduce Transparency; 6. Turned off Location Services; 7. Shut down all other apps while playing a game; 8. Disabled App Store automatic downloads; 9. Turned off Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Results and all apps from indexing in Spotlight; 10. Disabled iCloud sync. 11. Shut down and restart device.

In short, I tried everything I could think of to speed up iOS 9 on my iPad 3, and failed. I have now downgraded to iOS 8.4.1 and Hearthstone and my other games and apps are running snappily again.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend that anyone with an older device like an iPad 2 or 3, or the equivalent in an old iPhone, update to iOS 9. Especially if that device is your main way of playing games.

Hopefully this helps anyone with an older device considering an upgrade to iOS 9.

I never stated that you claim your procedure will restore a device to a previous iOS.

However, your post here does not clarify that this procedure should only be done if you either (a) are already running iOS 9 or (b) are 100% sure you want to upgrade to iOS 9.

I just wanted to let people know that, in case they were on the fence about upgrading to iOS 9 and have not yet done so, that if they choose to erase their iPad, doing so will automatically upgrade them to the latest iOS.

after upgrading the OS on my iPad 2 it became so unresponsive it was unusable. Luckily I was in the "window of opportunity" and I was able to downgrade to the old OS.

I Strongly recommend that owners of older models NOT upgrade to the latest OS. Of course apps are written to make use of the features in the new OS and, eventually, you will be unable to download new apps And you have to buy a new device. It's Apple's built-in obsolescence strategy!

Your experience with the latest iOS 9 on your older iPad is an atypical experience and is not the experience or representative of every other user of older iPad models.

Just because your older iPad is experiencing issues with the latest iOS doesn't mean the entire older iPad worldwide user community is having issues with the latest iOS.

The recent iOS 9.2.1 was made available to fix issues with older iPad and iDevice models as well as to plug some long standing security vulnerabilities.

Your iPad performance issues are not normal or typical of the majority of those using older iPad models.

Sorry.

Not true, I'm sad to say. I know several people with older iPads and 100% of them either reverted to the older O/S or simply abandoned tablets altogether (and use a phone/PC combo). None of them bothered logging their problems - they just made the switch.

just because people don't report their issue doesn't mean everything's rosy. However much Apple would like to think so.

And I stand by my advice. Do not upgrade the OS on an older IPad.- most people feel pain when they do.

I have upgraded/updated four iPad 2 models, two iPad 3 models, and one of my close friend's iPad 4 models using my own modified backup/update procedures and 100% of those iPads are running iOS 9.2.1 very well.

My iPad 2 and 3 64 GB storage models (both of which have around 20 GBs of storage left on them) are running very well with nary an issues on the latest iOS 9.2.1.

And my experiences are the normal rule and NOT the exception.

Thank you very much!

AND anyone who has had major issues with thier older iPad models and had followed all of my own various fixes and solutuons have had their older iPads return to either an acceptable working condition, or better, performance of their older iPad models.

My own list of fixes and my own modified backup/restore procedures have, to date so far, has returned over 2 dozen older iPads to a usable or noticeably improved and/or near "out of box" factory performance levels.

Again, you are citing just a very small minority of older iPad users having issues with their older model iPads.

You do not speak for myself or eveyone else's own experiences with iOS 9.2.1 on older iPad hardware and your own blanket statements, across the board, are grossly inaccurate, at the worst, and patently false, at best..

In addition, comments, remarks and replies such as yours and even the whole topic of this posting, in general, are against the terms of use of these Apple authorised user to user technical support communities to which you agreed to uphold when you signed up to participate in these forums.

So, unless your have a problem with your purchased Apple product to which you are asking for technical support assistance, you are violating the terms of use of these technical community forums and you need to move on to somewhere else.

Good Luck, Good health and Good Bye!

I definitely haven't worked through all your suggestions and I'll certainly do so. You're definitely underestimating the extent of this problem, though. None of my friends and acquaintances are using iPads withe latest o/s. Admittedly that's only 5 people so maybe it's too small a sampling. I wouldn't be in these forums if I wasn't looking for help so I'm a bit taken aback by the vitriol. Oh, well - good luck to you. It shouldn't be this difficult.

i have an iPad Air and it was very slow after upgrading to iOS 9. It always stutters when you switch apps, or even when you type. Until I came across a method on the web, It became quite annoying and it finally forced me to want to sell it and buy a new one. This method really solved everything and my iPad becomes as fast as it was in iOS 8. I must condemn apple for using this trick to try to coerce people to upgrade their device. I hope this will help everyone facing the problem.

The method is: Go to Settings -> iCloud -> iCloud Drive -> Turn off

I decided to try the OS 9 upgrade on my iPad 2 based on what I read from a poster here. I then tried all of the suggestions in this forum but I am unable to restore performance to an acceptable level. I also tried your iCloud Drive suggestion but that hasn't helped either.

Basically - as I feared - the tablet is toast.

i Can confirm the advice on here: Do NOT upgrade older iPads to OS 9.

I simply don't understand how Michel can come on here and suggest that an ipad2, using ios9, works "like new" without providing proof.

Also & random thought:
it would be nice to see Apple's Xcode developers put in auto-cfg feature which would check for SDK versioning-features used by ALL ios App developer codebases(during compile), as so the "weather app" that requires ios5 isn't forcing users to have ios9 to install or even function at base level. #SloppinessIsNotAttractive .. and a streaming video app should not require ios9..
#LegacySupportIsNormalUnlessYoureIOS
Sure we can blame the app-developers for not being smart enough to build properly.. but why not blame the source who can implement such things in a few days ?

Anyhow, not angry or bitter..just not "getting" how simple realities skips over some peoples' heads..
P.S. this forum has some seriously odd behaviors..cursor jumping..lines added.. YIKES!

Anyhow, let's be serious about this... it works one way, not the other.
..and if you would like to replace the ipad3 that I would test, IF it does not "work as new", then I will install to an ipad3. ..until then your replies are childish and moot. thx
