Advice: Do not update iPad 3 to iOS 9. Problems! Lag!

I updated my iPad 3 to iOS 9 yesterday (and downgraded today; thankfully Apple is still signing iOS 8.4.1).

Some background info: all of my apps were updated prior to me updating to iOS 9. I had 23 GB of free space on my 64 GB device. Mine is an iPad 3 wifi only. I have a fast broadband internet connection.

I experienced the following problems after upgrading to iOS 9: I play a lot of games on my iPad 3. Games like Hearthstone were extremely laggy on iOS 9. My turns would often end before the animations ended and before I had finished playing my turn. Everything took noticeably longer, whether it was looking at my cards, finding a matchup, etc. I got disconnected from the game a few times. Other games and apps were also affected with lag. I would make a selection and nothing would happen until a few seconds later.

I tried the following fixes to no avail to see if they would help speed up games and apps on my iPad 3 under iOS 9: 1. Turned off Background App refresh; 2. Turned off all notifications; 3. Checking email set to manual; 4. Under Settings/Accessibility/Reduce Motion - turned off Reduce Motion; 5. Under Settings/Accessibility/Increase Contract/Reduce Transparency - turned off Reduce Transparency; 6. Turned off Location Services; 7. Shut down all other apps while playing a game; 8. Disabled App Store automatic downloads; 9. Turned off Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Results and all apps from indexing in Spotlight; 10. Disabled iCloud sync. 11. Shut down and restart device.

In short, I tried everything I could think of to speed up iOS 9 on my iPad 3, and failed. I have now downgraded to iOS 8.4.1 and Hearthstone and my other games and apps are running snappily again.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend that anyone with an older device like an iPad 2 or 3, or the equivalent in an old iPhone, update to iOS 9. Especially if that device is your main way of playing games.

Hopefully this helps anyone with an older device considering an upgrade to iOS 9.

Did you do the upgrade to your iPad 2 using iTunes?

Doing ANY MAJOR computer or mobile system upgrades/updates will have a much, MUCH better chance of success doing them using iTunes on a computer.

Did you try ALL and not just any or random parts of the procedures I outlined?

Does your iPad 2 have the minimum 3-6 GBs or more free data space?

I am typing this message on my iPad 2 right this minute and it is working just peachy, thank you.

Why should I have to post proof?

I do not need to provide proof.

I have not changed my ways of doing iOS upgrades/updates for years.

I have never/ever used the over the air, WiFi method for doing system upgrades and my way of doing things seems to keep my older mobioe idevices and my Macs running pretty well.

I thought about trying to take a video using my iPod Touch to show and demonstrate how well the iPad 2 and 3 do on iOS 9 and posting this to YouTube with a link, but I can't take the video and operate my iPad 2 and 3 properly while shooting the video with out trying a way to set the iPod Touch up so it will be in a static and good position to take the video while using my iPad 2.

Too much effort by me with little to no reward other than to prove to users like you that iOS 9 runs well on older iPad 2 and 3 models.

csound1 .. don't be a fanboi.

about the update:
I will attempt updating an ipad3, hardwire style.

I ask for "proof" because there's countless people against ios9 on ipad3, and to read it form 2-3 people in Apple's forum is not the equivalent to that previous.

Anyhow..I'll try this out, if it *****, I'll stop buying Apple things. 😉

I don't understand why my link was removed, but I am posting this, again.

Here's your proof of how well iOS 9.2.1 runs on an iPad 2 and 3 model.

The creator of the video would've had faster iPad 2 and 3 models if all the graphics eye candy and background processes were all turned off.

My iPad 2 and 3 run even better than this video.

Here's the link once again.

So, it sounds as if you're saying that, if enough people say something, you'll believe them, simply because lots of people can't be wrong?

Just because a lot of people say something or believe something doesn't make them more right than the one person who says something different.

::facepalm:: some of you guys can't be THIS strange and perhaps feckless, can u ? ..I suppose that I expected 'developer mentality' which is my fault, 100%.
I will take the blame there since every day end-users tend to find my character as odd..and this is clearly not a dev forum.(is it?)

..some of you would rather argue nonsensical topics than help to resolve the issues at hand. #GetHelp 😝

@MichelPM, thank you for the notes. I have installed ios9 (hardwired) via your notes and I am ..hmm..not displeased ? *So, I would like to say thank you for the notes..because otherwise I would have avoided ios9.

FYI: I upgraded from 7 to 8and the experience was not a good one..and following that mindset, I assumed 9 to be progressively worse and was fearing that upgrading to ios9 would BRICK the device. *I am glad to see that is not the case.
Lastly, and once again; I appreciate your time spent on the notes here in this thread. 😉

This procedure worked perfectly for me on ipad3.

I was very reluctant to update from 6.1 as everything was running fine, but several of my favourite apps were getting new features, which I could not update too due to iOS being too old. There are also a few new apps I wanted to try, but again required iOS 7 or later, so could not install them.

After putting 9.3 on, following MichelPM procedure exactly, all seems fine, iPad seems as fast as it always was, just got to get used to the new look and features now :-)

Thank you Michel for the guidance, it helped me get over the fear of updating, especially after reading all the problems and disappointments others have had.

You installed iOS 9.3?

If you got your iPad updated to iOS 9.3 and everything is hunky dory, you sir, are one of the few that did!

iOS 9.3, to date, is still a "instawation" and bug "widden", "twainweck" of a iOS "woll "out and "instawation".

Still many older iPad users with dead, "bwicked" and non-functional or barely functional iPads.'

And those that finally managed to get their older iPads updated are experiencing WiFi issues, Safari and iOS Mail issues.

So, consider yourself "wucky"!

😉😝
