iPhone issues after iOS 9/9.0.1 update

Hello! I have been having multiple issues with my iPhone 5s after the iOS software updates. I will list the issues under whichever update I noticed they began.

iOS 9 Update

-Battery drain -- expected and not too terrible, but enough of a hindrance to have me charging the phone by 7 or 8 pm (I have already taken measures to stop this before the update. I have the screen brightness turned down, I have shut off many of my apps from refreshing in the background, I make sure all apps are completely closed out of, I have the screen lock set to 1 minute without activity, etc.)

-Missed Call notification issue -- I get a missed call, go to the call log to check it, close out of the call log, and the notification remains there. It takes multiple times of opening and closing the call log and/or flipping between the call log and my voicemail or contacts before the notification will go away. Very annoying!

-Text ringtone -- After the update, my texting ringtone does not always play. It is very hit or miss. I have to check my phone periodically just to make sure I am not missing incoming text messages because the tone does not play.

-Glitches -- phone seems overall more buggy after update, becomes slow and glitchy when going from one app to the other or closing out of all apps

-Touchscreen malfunctions -- trying to hang up on a call or use speakerphone is hit or miss because the touchscreen does not respond to my taps sometimes

iOS 9.0.1 Update

-Updated on its own -- I never updated to the new version on my own. My phone completely died and when it powered back on, the update had begun on its own. There was no way for me to close the update.

-Settings -- Every time my phone is shut off and turned back on, the Settings app automatically starts up. I have to make sure to immediately close out of the app after the phone has powered back on or else it will just keep running in the background.

-Many of the issues after the initial update remain such as battery drain, Missed Call notification, glitches when switching between apps or closing them, and touchscreen malfunctions.

Does anyone have any fixes for any of these problems or has anyone experienced the same ones?

Thank you!

Yes, I have sluggish problems with both ios 9 och 9.0.1 with both iPhone 5s 16GB and iPhone 6 64GB. Problems also in the Message app where I sometimes can't see what I'm typing.

Have been in contact with Apple Support and are waiting for their reply.

I am completely disgusted with the iOS v9.x update, to the point that I'm in shopping for Android replacement (and I've been a devout iPhone user and champion for 5+ years). I'm running an iPhone 5 and while I don't expect lightning speed on this older model, it's practically unusable when 2 out of every 3 times I touch the phone it takes 5-10 seconds to respond. I hoped to roll back to v8.x but that is no longer an option.
Why should I invest $400 on a phone when Apple OS updates will render it useless in 18 months?

I bought iPhone 6s recently. updated to ios 9.1. now the prob is it charges slowly while screen is locked, and when i unlock while charging it charges speedily. i have restarted iPhone several time to see if problem and i noticed that some time battery percentage written less and some time more even after fully charged. like when its on 90 while locked and charging when i remove charger and restart it, it shows 86 and some times 98...😕😟 i don't know what to do.

This is called planned obsolescence, my iphone 6 was running perfect when i bought it about a year ago, then after each update the performance got more and more sluggish, sending/deleting voice clips causes the phone to freeze for 5 seconds, and the snappy feeling the phone had when i first bought it is gone. They do this on purpose so that we are forced to buy the newer iphone, it is business as usual, that's why you cannot downgrade back to the previous version where your phone would run smooth and fine. The sad thing is that they get away with this kind of unethical practices. They wont worth billions anymore if you and me wont buy each new edition of the iphone.

Yes, I have the exact problem as iphoneFanatic143 who mentioned the "Searching" message that comes up after cell connection is lost and it never seems to resolve. I too use AT&T, just like the other commenter, but AT&T is not the problem. It's the result of the update and it has gotten progressively worse. My phone is completely dysfunctional. I cannot use it as a phone, texting device, gps, or internet browser AT ALL. I'm not sure why I even have it. I called Apple and was basically told to wait until the next update to "see" if that would fix the problem. Nada. A brief "fix" is to turn off phone and turn back on, but that only works for a minute or two. Very frustrated and am thinking iPhone technology is resting on its laurels and not all it's cracked up to be anymore.

Update since it's been a couple of months! I am really bad at community discussions! Anyway, I completely wiped my

phone because I was so fed up with all of the issues. I used a backup from my computer to get my apps, photos, and music back. Unfortunately, not everything could be reinstalled on my phone after me factory resetting it because my backup was done using iOS 8. I at least got the things I wanted the most put back on the phone. This seemed to help dramatically! My battery life went back to near normal, my text tones started working again, I wasn't having anymore lag with the phone, etc. Flash forward to now and I am having a few issues once again. The phone has become sluggish. It isn't a daily thing, but it's happening more and more throughout the week. There are performance issues within apps and I keep all of my apps updated. There are a few issues when transitioning from one app to another sometimes. I make sure to close out of apps as soon as I am done with them. I don't have a mass amount of apps running at one time. I don't know why it has taken another turn for the worse. I'm afraid that it isn't going to get better this time. There have been a few times when the phone has completely froze and I have been unable to do anything with it for a minute or two. It's very frustrating! My text tone stopped playing again. I soft reset the device to see if this would help some of the issues. It brought my text tone back for a day and then nothing. I had to go back to checking my phone every once in awhile to make sure I wasn't missing text messages from others. I went to my tone settings and played the text tone in a preview before setting it. It will play there, it just won't play when I actually get a text message from someone. All of my other phone sounds work just fine. I have since changed the tone and it plays just fine whenever I get a text message now. I don't know what is causing it to stop working randomly after awhile. The phone also gets warm. I have never had an issue with an iPhone getting warm due to normal use. After iOS 9, that's exactly what happens. The phone will get warm if I have a phone conversation for longer than an hour. It gets warm while charging. It gets warm when I've been on the same app for too long. I just don't understand it nor have I found any long term solutions. I have been shopping around for an Android here and there. Unfortunately, I can't afford a pricey phone and I have no options for a deal on a phone through Verizon. I have to find one I can afford. I really don't want to leave Apple, but I can't be doing this. I need a phone that I can afford and that means an older model of the iPhone. However, it seems the older models aren't meant to last as soon as a new one comes out. I understand they need to make money, but I will not be buying a new iPhone every single year.

I don't see, in that solid block of text, that you ever restored your iPhone as new and tested it. If you restore it as new and then text its performance and it works correctly, then the problem could well be in your back up.

By the way, the fact that the back up was made while a phone was running iOS 8.1 should not prevent everything from being restored onto a phone running iOS 9. The fact that you had a problem with the back up lends further credence to the notion that your problem may lie with the back up.

Dec 9, 2015 9:10 PM in response to SolomonBrundy

My problem does not lie in the back up. I have a 16 gig iPhone 5s that has the same back up that I put into this phone and it works perfectly fine. It is also still running iOS 8. I haven't updated that one to iOS 9 because I don't want to run the risk of it having any of the problems this one currently has. Whenever I back up my phone, it backs up absolutely everything. It backs up all of my apps, the screen layout, the wallpapers, the call logs, the text messages, etc. I factory reset the phone and programmed it as a new phone for a few hours. Yes, I went and restored a back up from my computer a few hours after the reset, but I had to. I have a lot of school work saved to my phone. I'm not always home and I can't always use my laptop wherever I go. I can use my phone wherever I go though. I can't just set up as new and leave everything right now because I would lose all my schoolwork. The back up did restore all of my apps, the layouts of my screens, and most of my settings. It also restored my pictures and music. It didn't restore my call logs or text messages as it normally does. There was a notification that popped up on iTunes saying that some things could not be set up because my back up was from a previous software edition. It didn't say exactly that, but something along those lines. I've never backed up a phone using a back up that was saved with different software than the phone was currently running. I thought the message was normal. Is it not? I will try factory resetting my phone again and not downloading a back up when this semester is over. In the meantime, I am still frustrated that the phone was working perfectly fine after the last reset and back up until this month. Now the problems are slowly returning. It shouldn't be like that. If it was doing fine after the reset and the back up (which happened at the very beginning of October), it shouldn't all of a sudden be having some of the same issues it was when it was first updated to iOS 9 months ago. The fact that it was running normal after the last reset and back up only further lends me to believe that the problem lies not in my back up, but in the iOS 9 software itself.
