I spoke to apple about this - they are pretty confident its a software bug, once which they are trying to fix for the 9.1 update, may be that the new update to the beta includes this. It looks like it's more a screen frozen on black screen then it turning off, hence why only the reset works.

Always worth calling apple and reporting it when this does happen, they run diagnostics on the phone and if nothing else it may help them identify a common error that will allow them to resolve it.

I've had my iPhone replaced today following 5 different issues in 2.5 weeks, the final straw being constant corrupted back ups through iCloud which meant I couldn't restore from back up through it anymore. New one has been restored through iTunes back up and seems to be working as expected so far. Fingers crossed that's the end of black screen issues or if not, that there is a software patch released without the Beta program soon.

Too soon to call? It's days between crashes for me and it's random. Beta 5 just out so surely it needs a couple of days/week to know?

Apple asked me to reset settings this morning and I've not had a crash today, but I'm not confident that's a real fix. If it held for a week then maybe.

People have said beta 4 was the fix but on the developer forums some posts say different.

So, I wonder - how many of us have updated to beta 5 and seen a marked difference then? Just wonder if its too early to tell.

There is still something going on - even if iOS 9 is the 'issue and fix', there is no reason this should then only happen on a small subset of phones (clearly, it's a problem for a good amount of people; but we can also assume that the majority of the millions of users have not had the issue happen).

Why then is that the case? What are 'we doing' that is different than the majority that also has 9.0.x...?

Allright folks... I've been running the 9.1Beta4 and now Beta5 since Monday morning. Zero crashes!!! And I have had at least once a day since September 25. Thinking this is pretty conclusive. It was a software issue, and somethin in 9.1 fixes it. If you aren't or don't want to be in the beta program at least know that it's not your device and help is on the way.

New iPhone 6s user here and I just wanted to chime in. I've had my phone for 5 days, checked a message, put the phone in my pocket, pulled it out a minute later and it was unresponsive. I got the sense that the phone was still on but frozen and the home button was unusually warm. I forced restarted and everything came back up fine. I think my uptime was about 5 days. I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but I believe my phone has the Samsung chip.

It looks like iOS 9.1 might address the issue. So I have my fingers crossed.

I have another thread that was started around the same time as this but I will jump in on this and share my experiences here.

I have been keeping a log of all of the times that my phone has randomly turned off.

October 11, 2015 shut down overnight while I was asleep: iCloud Backup not completed

October 15, 2015 shut down overnight while asleep: had to re-enter Facebook credentials in Settings app

iCloud Backup not completed

October 15, 2015 shut down 8:00 pm

October 16, 2015 shut down overnight, over slept because alarm didn't go off.

Now, a couple of additional things to note:

When my phone shut off last night I happened to think to look at my Apple Watch and noticed that I did not have the red iPhone symbol with a line through it indicating that the watch wasn't connected to the phone. Which would make me think that it isn't really off , but I still couldn't do anything to bring it back up without holding down the sleep/wake and home button though.

On my drive to work this morning I got wondering if it was a difference in which A9 chip you received, Samsung or TSMC. In the thread that I started someone said they exchanged their phone and the had the TSMC and now have the Samsung and haven't seen the issue. That theory goes out the window because I have the Samsung A9 and am experiencing it.
