Are all the iPhones having this issue on at&t? The reason I ask, is that I was visiting my daughter on 9/26 when she had this issue on her unlocked at&t iPhone 4S! She said it has been going on for awhile (months). Told her her software needed to be updated (she was on iOS 7). She has since updated to 9.0.2, still has the same issue. Yesterday I had the same thing with my unlocked 6S on at&t. In both cases battery was about 50%.
I have this problem also, however, I seem to have found that it caused by the magnet in my case. If I insert the phone upside down, it doesn't happen.
Had my iPhone 6s 64GB for a week. Today it was a black screen. Thought it was the battery but after pressing the home button and the power button for over 10 seconds it restarted.

Hello,
no, not all iphones with that problems are AT&T,
German ones with T-Online too.
Same issue here with my iPhone 6s Plus , 128GB Gold, running 9.1 Beta 3.
German T-Mobile
update:
check on your phone latest logs. I found that memory was overused.
maybe this is a problem.

I think the 6s is suseptible to magnetic fields causing the processor to drop a bit and then crash. I found this happens only when I place it in my case with the screen facing the magnetic latch.
I Have been having the same problem with one of our 128gb 6S plus models (though strangely only one of them exhibits the problem). Mine is accompanied with a red hot home button - seems others have this issue:-
My iPhone 6s home button is really hot and the device won't turn on
What to do now? Waiting for Software fix? I am running on 9.1 beta 3, so this is the latest what you can get
From Apple.
Or is it more Hardware related?
No, nothing with magnetic fields.
It happens without case aswell.
iPhone 4, 5 ans 6 Users reports the same problems. So it have to be a software problem.
I think it's software related, because if I close all my Apps in the evening before going to bed, the phone was ok next morning.
Only if I didn't close all Apps, I had the issue with the black screen and the hot Home button next morning.
I can only recommend to call Apple and let them do a remote diagnose on your phone, so they get more data from the affected phones.
Just in order to augment the number of persons reporting this issue: my iPhone 6s (64 GB) crashed on october 1st. Last thing I used it for was calling a taxi cab. When I was at home, the screen was black and I had to make the usual hard reset.
My Iphone 6S 64GB was just unresponsive - black screen - only holding down Power+Home for 5 seconds made it boot up again.
I had an iPhone 5s and restored it to my 6s. Since releasedate i had this issue 4 times.
Last week i backuped my 6s and restored it again. Since 5 days no blackscreen so far.
Perhaps a second restore helps?
I have the same issue but on the iPhone 6, Its a Hardware problem. waiting for new replacement unit.
Brand new or refurbished unit ?
