How to add times for a logbook

Hi gomlic,

I think you are facing the "crossing midnight" problem where Out and In times are both entered on the same day, instead of being entered on the actual Out and In days.

Expanding the columns and formatting to show the full Date & Time:

Row 2 Out and In entered on the actual days (Tuesday Out, Wednesday In) showing the correct Duration of 2h 25m in C2

Row 3 Out and In both entered after "crossing midnight" on Wednesday showing a negative Duration.

The way around this is to add "1d" (one day) to the result if negative.

Formula in D2 (and Fill Down)

=IF(B3>A3,B3−A3,B3−A3+"1d")

The result in D3 shows an unnecessary 0d (0 day).

D4 is formatted to show only h and m (hr and min) in Format Panel > Cell > Data Format > Duration > Custom Units

I see you posted in the other thread. If you don't need to convert to tenths then Ian's formula above should do the trick if you don't want to go in and change the date for flights that cross midnight. That's a convenience only. If you want to be sure to have a proper record you'd probably want to adjust the date to the following day when you encounter a negative duration.

To get the duration in decimal hours simply wrap Ian's formula in DUR2HOURS, so it becomes:

=DUR2HOURS(IF(B2>A2,B2−A2,B2−A2+"1d"))
