Photos performance comparable to Iphoto

Hi, I had recently updated my late 2011 MB pro 17" to Yosemite OS hoping to get benefit of the new Photo app.

I'm experiencing the same behaviour i had with iPhoto that causes the rainbow wheel spinning after scrolling the photos inside an album or an event.

Editing in full screen mode is also difficult for the same matter..

Is it this issue related to huge library size (over 200GB)?

The library is stored on secondary SSD of 0.5TB that don't seem to be defective.

Can someone help me with this issue or there's a better app to handle huge photos libraries?

Thanks

Jabiru

200GB is not huge for a Photos Library. My library has roughly the same size and is very responsive.

How long ago is it, that you upgraded to Yosemite and migrated the library to Photos? The library may be slow during the first few days because of plenty of background processing during the initial set-up, like scanning for Faces or Places. This will be much better, nce the initial set-up has been accomplished.

Are you using iCloud Photo Library?

Do you have plenty of free storage on your system drive?

Is Photos performing better when you switch to a different Potos library? Create an empty library for testing and add a few photos.

See: Use multiple libraries

Hi leonie,

i had upgraded to Yosemite since a month approximatively.

I cannot see an improvement since the migration to the new OS.

The hard drive containing the library has around 150 GB of free space.

I had even upgraded system RAM up to 16GB to be sure...

I'm not currently using iCloud photo library as i share my photo library locally with another user account on the same computer as i did with old iPhoto.

I will test creating a new smaller library to see if it's getting better..

Do you think splitting the library into severals ones e.g. yearly based ones can help?

Thanks

Jabiru

Photos should be able to cope with a 200GB library. That is reasonably sized.

I suggested the test with a new library so you can see, if the library is causing the slowness becaus eof a corruption, or or there is a different problem.

The library is stored on secondary SSD of 0.5TB that don't seem to be defective.

Is this drive formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled), as is recommended? And is the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" flag set for the drive, since yo are sharing the library with another user?

Sep 30, 2015 2:42 PM in response to léonie

I'm using Photos right now and even if i just open a picture inside an album rotate or tweak exposure after clicking Done the wheel spins for a while .

If i look at the Activity monitor during the wheel spinning Photos status changes to Not responding. Is normal that the Bytes read value for the Photos Process increase progressively even if i'm just have the program active.. ?

Library hard drive is correctly formatted as well as the flag properly set.

Sep 30, 2015 3:47 PM in response to Jabiru06

Did you use CleanMyMac to remove duplicates from your library? That may have removed essential files that are necessary for a speedy performance. Or some other corruption of the internal database files is making problems.

Try, if repairing the library will improve things. https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/pht6be18f93

Repair your library

If you experience problems with photos in a library, Photos can try to repair it. If problems persist, you can also restore your library from a Time Machine backup.

Important: You should back up your photo library before repairing your library.

  1. If Photos is open, choose Photos > Quit Photos.
  2. Press Option-Command and double-click the Photos icon in the Applications folder (or click the Photos icon in the Dock). The Repair Library window opens.
  3. Click Repair to rebuild your photo library.

Here's you problem. CMM is considered malware around here. Uninstall it according to the developer's instructions: How To Uninstall CleanMyMac 2? Complete Removal of ...

You can check to see if you've removed all of the files by downloading and running Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name and the developer's name in the file name. For example for CleanMyMac you'd do two searches:

1 - Name contains cleanmymac

2 - Name contains macpaw

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Once you've completed the removal run Photos again and then run Etrecheck again.
