El Capitan running slowly?

Is anyone else having the issue of your Mac running wicked slow after the new El Capitan update? Word, Safari, Preview, and iTunes wouldn't open- they froze and I had to force quit them. Even typing this there is a major lag and the pinwheel appears. What's up with that? So far I hate how slow it's making my mac.

I had the same problem with my mid-2010 IMac, but then I upgraded from El Capitan to Sierra. Huge improvement! Problem solved.

Since I figured it was also a RAM issue, I ordered 16MB of it (from 4MB), but I never installed it. Now I'm wondering whether I even need to.

Huge relief as I was almost ready to order a replacement computer.

There are so many websites, forum posts and comments about El Capitan, there must be 'something' about it that is causing all these problems? I went through the pain of Mavericks wiping a WD Hard Drive and Yosemite glitches, but they were nothing compared to this: I have done ALL the things suggested and it is no better - I have over 30% of my HD free, memory usage (according to Activity Monitor) rarely exceeds 20%, but still EVERYTHING is slow and hangs - most times the cursor can't keep up with the keyboard and I see the spinning beachball of death more times than I don't.

No more so than any other version of OS X to date, people love to complain about the latest change. That never changes.

I'm still seeing some issues on my iMac running OSX El Capitan, but its performing far better than after the initial upgrade to OSX El Capitan.

Here's some of the things I've done which have improved things:

  • Upgraded to OSX 10.11.3 - the latest upgrade - which does seem to straighten out some of the issues.
  • Safari was running annoyingly slow (e.g. 10-15 seconds) - both when starting it up and when trying to open a new tab - but following a tip on here, I cleared out all the browser extensions and since then it has run perfectly (e.g. like before OSX El Capitan)
  • Used the HDCleaner app to remove all caches and logs, as I'd read in a few different places that these were liable to slow things down
  • I've also noticed that after a restart or fresh bootup of my iMac, things tend to be running a little slow, but then after everything I use day to day has been loaded in, it seems to run along well

I'm still seeing the following issues, but much less than previously:

  • Mail app hangs very occasionally and I have to restart it. Just after initial upgrade to OSX El Capitan it was doing this all the time and also constantly asking for passwords to be re-entered - that was really annoying.
  • Finder, in multi-tab, sometimes goes wrong and has to be restarted, but again, much less than after initial upgrade

Hmmm. the utility actually seemed to improve performance. El Cap has not "ruined" my Mac, only made my professional workstation tasks slower. I have a very clean and organized machine, so I was surprised to have so many issues. As far as going to Apple for this, I'm not a kid with a laptop. this is a working professional tower unit. An Apple store would not be able to diagnose or perform any fixes in a timely manner once I lugged it down. What would happen is simply a clean install that I would get charged for.

Was hoping to avoid the hours it will take to do this and set up the machine properly. The install is the easy part.

I'm in the same boat Kurt, mine is work station computer and nearest apple store is 120 miles away.

The guys commenting above are just going to keep defending El Capitan and tell you it's your hardware or you are crazy though. You know, us crazy Mac people that hate macs.

I had a flawless, fast, awesome, PRODUCTIVE Mac when I had 10.6.8. Nothing changed on my computer. I did the recommended install and it all went to crap. Then after weeks of frustration I wasted an ENTIRE DAY re-installing from scratch and wiping my HD. The same annoyances are still there, and even after 10.11.3. They keep adding more and more crap that no one needs to the OS and then big surprise there are tons of glitches. Yay, my dock and windows are transparent, neat! But it takes me 45 seconds to drag and drop a PDF into a new folder... but my transparent things, so who cares!

YES we are just complaining. I don't get payed to make operating systems or trouble shoot them. You expect a company making billions to provide you with error or minimal error free operating systems.

You must be right, ElCapitan just doesn't work, millions are mistaken, but what if they are not, and you are?

Feb 24, 2016 12:23 PM in response to Csound1

Completely disagree. I have been using Macs for probably longer than most of you are old. Yes, there were a few bumps in the road, but by and large, Apple system updates have been solid, as long as you waited a few months for the "beta testers" ;-) to report the realtime issues and get them resolved. Compared to the ones I've done in just the past 5 years, this one threw me (and my machine) for a loop, even waiting as long as I did to update.

Do you think abstractly at all Csound1???

Do you REALLY think that every one of those millions of people speak up? They are probably just dealing with it or haven't noticed anything because they use their Mac for making crappy iMovies no one wants to watch, or putting music on their iPod or iPhone.

For every person that comments or posts online in the 1,000's of web pages there are related to El Capitan, you can be sure that there are hundreds more not commenting.

Like Kurt said, I am also a long time mac user of 20 years. This is the FIRST I've had massive problems with an OS like those in El Capitan.

Here is a nice article among the many many many many many others... http://www.itbusiness.ca/blog/apples-el-capitan-problems-make-windows-10-look-ev en-better/60879

El Capitan has given me many issues as well. I just don't have the time to complain about it on support forums. Its a horrible OS and a big step back for OS X. So you are wrong in that it works for everyone else.

If you have a Time Machine backup from when your system was running a previous OS, or if you previously downloaded/installed an earlier OS through the App store, you can downgrade your system. If you don't, then you're stuck, and it would be better to get your issues dealt with than to complain about them.

Feb 24, 2016 1:49 PM in response to bpdesignguy

To be honest, there are much fewer users complaining here about El Capitan as compared to previous OSXs. You only need to look back through these forums to see just how 'unusable Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite in particular were all hounded down as 'unusable'. The same will happen when the next OS X is released and we will get all the usual posts about how people want to downgrade to the old faithful El Capitan. It happens all the time. A few have issues with every OS X ever released. Personally we have El Capitan running on over twenty machines in the studio and they have never run better. Of course we have updated RAM and most have had SSDs installed for maximum performance. It is an age old argument, but as I say, there seem to be much fewer complaints around about El Capitan compared to earlier OSXs.

Cheers

Now, now. calm down. The reason people come here is to see if others are having the same problems they are and getting constructive advice or personal experience from their peers. Rather than attack those that are having problems (and you've been very condescending) , please either provide some additional (constructive) insight or offer your advice to other topics that you have experience with. People get frustrated when things don't work.
