El Capitan running slowly?

Is anyone else having the issue of your Mac running wicked slow after the new El Capitan update? Word, Safari, Preview, and iTunes wouldn't open- they froze and I had to force quit them. Even typing this there is a major lag and the pinwheel appears. What's up with that? So far I hate how slow it's making my mac.

I had the same problem with my mid-2010 IMac, but then I upgraded from El Capitan to Sierra. Huge improvement! Problem solved.

Since I figured it was also a RAM issue, I ordered 16MB of it (from 4MB), but I never installed it. Now I'm wondering whether I even need to.

Huge relief as I was almost ready to order a replacement computer.

Vapresto wrote: "The irony of my situation was that I did lots of research before I 'upgraded', as I wanted to continue with Aperture (I am a professional event photographer with over 2 million images in around 100 libraries). So, I waited until a few fellow Aperture users had gone to El Capitan and said Aperture still worked. I also did a lot of Googling and found a few reports of people with older MacBook Pros, with low RAM, finding El Capitan actually sped their machines up..."

Vapresto, I am in EXACTLY the same situation as you, and did the same checks before "upgrading" to ElCapitan. The only reason I upgraded was to try to make Aperture run as long as possible, and get a couple more years out of it at least.

What a fiasco. We apparently have to become computer experts in order to make the machine work properly. We are told on this forum by self-styled experts that we should have known better; that we should have done this and that; that "most" other people don't have this problem. It's our fault, you see…

That's not what Macs were originally intended to be! I've been using them for over 20 years.

Clearing the Library and ~Library cache folders and then doing a PRAM reset worked for me.

To clear the cache folders, click on Finder.

Once Finder is open go to the top left bar. To the right of the  in the top left corner of the screen will be the word “Go”. Select “Go” and then “Computer” > “Mac HD” > “Library”.

While in the Library, find the “Caches” folder and open it so the word “Caches” is now showing as the name at the top of the window.

Next press “command+A” on the keyboard to select everything within the Caches folder. Once everything is selected, go to the top left bar again and find the word “File”. In the drop down box for File, select “Move To Trash”.

The next step is going back to Finder.

Once back on Finder, go back to “Go” on the top left bar on the screen and this time press and hold the “option/alt” key.

This will reveal “Library” in the drop down box for “Go”. Select “Library” and find the “Caches” folder again and open it so the name “Caches” is on the top window name again.

Next steps will be the same thing as in the last Caches folder. Press “command+A” to select everything within the Caches folder. Once everything is selected, go to the top left where “File” is and in the drop down box for File select “Move To Trash”.

Then power off the Mac and do a PRAM reset.

Hold the bottom left “command + option/alt + R” keys with the left hand. Keep holding these three keys with the left hand and don’t release them.

With the right hand then, press and release the power button and then immediately hold the letter “P” key down while the computer powers on.

Hold until you hear the computer chime on twice or if you see it turn on, off and on again.

Once you see or hear this, you can release all four keys and should boot back to the desktop normally and then empty the trash and test again.

I'm also having lagging and speed issues following an upgrade to an SSD and doubling the RAM. I ran EtreCheck (results posted below), but nothing stands out as a problem. I am considering buying another SSD to see if that's the issue, but I want to make sure it's not a configuration problem first. Failing that, the next step would seem to be dropping a few grand on a new MacBook Pro.

I'm also finding that my Mac tends to get hot a lot, causing the fan to run high periodically, even if I'm only typing a message, like I am now. There's nothing is running in the background that I can find, such as a download, update, etc. While installing the RAM and SSD, the motherboard, fan and heatsink were cleaned, so cleanliness wouldn't seem to be the issue.

I've always loved my Mac and the other Apple products I own. It's only been the last couple of years I've been dealing with my Mac slowing down, which was completely understandable considering it's had to manage the more demanding software / OS updates of the day.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Problem: Beachballing

Description:

I’m running a mind-2009 15” MacBook Pro. Because my Mac was beginning to slow down, especially when operating MS Word, when it would report it was out of memory. I decided to upgraded to a 500GB SSD and doubled the RAM to 8 GB. After a fresh install of OS X El Capitan 10.11.15, my Mac routinely lags and pauses performing the simplest functions, such as moving between selections in settings, opening an application, etc, … all that even before reinstalling my backed up files, music and programs. My wife did the same process to her Max (same model), and has enjoyed the significant improvement in operating speed. My upgrade has been a disappointment. We have performed the reinstall process 4 times with no change in performance. While many others report the same/similar issue in Apple Communities, no definitive problem or solution has been provided over the past two years.
