Airplay issue with El Capitan

Having a reliability issue while using airplay with el capitan to apple tv 3! it will either work after a long delay (and not turn off) or won't work at all. My iPhone 6S iOS 9.0.2 works fine with airplay and my home network is not an issue. Anyone else have this issue?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

I have a similar issue with my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013) on El Capitan. I can connect to my Apple TV 3 (I copy the screen) but it's still not usable: slow framerate and the sound is "cut". I tried the old tips (disconnect the bluetooth for example) but nothing fix the problem.

Does Apple try their features?

PS: The AirPlay works fine with my iPhone 5s and my iPad Mini 2 Retina (both on iOS 9.0.2).

My Airplay for audio works fine from two El Capitan systems, sending to an Airport Express as well as to an ATV2.

10.11.1 seemed to fix the issues that I had with Airplay, although the monitor mirroring is not as good as it was in Mavericks and Yosemite.

I also structured my Home Audio around Airplay, So I also was a bit freaked when I had troubles.

Can't live without my Tunes, Airplay and the home network makes it so easy to distribute.

Good luck with your issues.

Hello ... I have experienced all of the problems discussed here since updating to El Capitan. I mostly fixed the Apple TV issue by resorting to a direct update via iTunes using the mini-USB port on the ATV. But I also have an issue that has not been mentioned here : I use a LiveBox in Paris on the Numericable network. When watching television, the picture goes black for a few seconds every couple of minutes. Curiously, the problem completely disappears if I turn off WiFi on my MacBooks (two models : one 2011 and one Retina). The LiveBox is supposedly AirPlay compatible : indeed, it is possible to select in when running iTunes, but not from the main Finder menu bar. This suggests to me that El Capitan is polling the WiFi network (I use a new Airport Express) and interrupting everything while it pokes around. There is an application that runs on root called AirPlayXPCHelper that, if you watch Activity Monitor, goes in and out of active in sync with the interruption of the television signal. Thus, my conclusion is that this app has some kind of a bug. I should mention that when the MacBook WiFi is turned off, everything works without a glitch, including streaming from IOS9 devices. Voila ... I know this doesn't help much, but the takeaway is : if you are streaming from IOS9, turn off the WiFi on your MacBook (or any other computer) that is running El Capitan and connected to your network. I'm pretty sure the problem will go away for you too. Meanwhile, Apple's coders need to get busy.

I think that people stating that restarting their ATV or their computer resolve the problem should stop posting this kind of tip since it is now clear that this is not a general solution. Many of us have already rebooted their ATV and/or their computer a number of time and still have the same issue.

As mentioned in one of my previous post, my MBPR can mirror on a ATV2 at my office but on the ATV2 at home. One difference is the way my computer is connected to the network: Ethernet cable at office, WIFI at home. I tried to connect via Ethernet at home, but this did not solve the problem. Now, I am starting to believe that it may be related to the router. In my case I use at home an Airport Time Capsule 802.11n (3rd generation). Could the people post here which type of connection they are using?

Thank you.

I have an Airport Extreme. If the current product is considered 4th generation, then I have 3rd generation.

Hooking up via ENet originally did not work any better. The 10.11.1 upgrade "almost" fixed my problem.

Still does not work as well as it did in Yosemite, but video does not chatter like it is disjointed still pictures.

resetting ATV2 was one of the first things I tried, I also did a reset most times I tried a "new fix".

Fixed!!!! I had the exact same issue. I talked to apple support via chat for awhile and we established it was a 3rd party app that was opening during start up. Open "System preferences>Users and Groups" It will have your user account highlighted. Beside "password" in the top menu, click "Login Items". Click all the boxes available, then click the "-" minus at the bottom of the list. Restart. Airplay should be working again for mirroring and iTunes. This took a month to figure out. I'm running ESET, FLUX and SMC Fan Control. I haven't had time to figure out which of these was the problem, but I'll post when I have had the chance to go through one by one and figure out who the culprit was.

Found a solution that worked for me. I have a late 2012 rMBP running airplay on an ATV3. After upgrading to El Capitan airplay video became laggy and my fans would run hard. I open activity monitor to see that two processes were taking up 200% of CPU. The main culprit was XPEncoder (app 150%) and Airplay XPC helper (app 50%). If I close both of these processes one right after the other, airplay turns off. If I then restart it, everything is fixed. When you restart your computer the problem returns and you have to repeat the procedure, so it isn't a longterm fix, but at least I can watch videos on my projector again until apple sorts this out.

Hope this helps some people.

FOUND THE ANSWER!

If anyone has installed DUET, it was the culprit for me!

Duet conflicts with the airplay feature,

I uninstalled DUET and airplay works great.

Any 3rd party software that connects a secondary screen might be the cause.

So glad I found that one out.

Airplay working great now!

On DUET website:

Some customers are reporting issues with AirPlay when Duet is installed and they mirror or extend their desktop to an Apple TV.

We have consulted with lead engineers on Apple's Airplay team and they are aware of the issue with 3rd party display applications but a fix does not seem likely in the foreseeable future.
