no mail sounds after installing El Capitan

I just installed El Capitan and the first thing that I have noticed is that the normal sounds that apple mail puts out do not come out of the speakers. iTunes works fine but not then mail sounds. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks for helping me with the POP or IMAP choice. I'm still not sure that I will move to IMAP after so many years of using my POP account. I'm not a fan of web based mail to begin with. As for alternate mail programs, only at gunpoint would I choose to use one. I'm used to Apple Mail, happy with it, not counting the current issues, and I don't want to learn a new program unless there's no other choice.

As for moving posts, I've lost track of posts too many times when dragging, and accidentally let go of the click. So I use the hierarchal menu Message/Move To option, and that serves me well. I do move posts between mailboxes (folders), but have not found a need to copy.them.

I used to run both TM and a SuperDuper or CCC clone, but, I've not replaced the HD for TM since it went soiuth. That was a couple of years ago, and I really haven't missed TM. I noticed that the upgrade to El Cap broke my CCC clone setup, so that I'll have to go in and take a look at it, maybe reset it. But, as things are, my clone is still running Yosemite, so I'm in no hurry to upgrade it just yet. I like to use WD Red HDs for clones, but, after getting used to my Fusion model on my internal HD, I get impatient with the old standard drives, even though I use only 7200 rpm drives. Maybe I should look at SSDs, but they're still pricey in comparison, and the Fusion drives are an good alternative. I'll probably grab another WD Red HD for the other external enclosure and start TM back up one of these days.

Time Machine backups are a bit like your seatbelt. You might only need it once, but it sure is a good to have it when needed.

I understand your reluctance to test in another email account, but it's easy to do and you can delete it when you complete the test or keep it to use when you think you are going to get spammed. I have a gmail address that I use for newsletters etc. I only access in my browser so I keep all the spam emails separated from my good email.

I just spend 2 hours with the Apple tech about the no "mail notification sound" and hear is what they told me.

We no longer support POP3 mail accounts in El Capitan. You need to have your mail server change your mail over to IMAP to be able to get the new mail sound to work.

BUT.... she said I can do that for you. Now it's working. But I lost most of my mail in that process, so have you mail server change your mail account to a IMAP account and everything will be ok.

The tech help representative told me "your the first one to complain about this".

Yeah right. Everyone with a pop3 account is having this problem.

I had the notion that this might happen. Because icloud is imap, for some strange reason, APPLE in its infinite wisdom, has decided to cast aside all POP users?? This sure sounds alot like a "Microsoft" move to me. Why would this be allowed to happen in the upper ranks of Apple??? Let's hope the CSR that helped? richfromhooper was wrong in her assumption that they have abandoned POP accounts in there OS. I can only imagine, the people right now trying to publish a way to go back to the previous OS with NO hiccups. I can't imagine how they let us "upgrade" to elCapitan with our POP accounts. There should have been some type of warning that this "upgrade"? would have effect our existing POP accounts...

Again, just my opinion...

If it is true that apple have abandoned POP3 (and I suspect it is) there absolutely should have been a warning that Mail will not function correctly for POP3 accounts with El Capitan. At the very least Apple must make it possible for people to revert to a system where it does function properly with POP 3. I am not prepared to leave my emails on a server somewhere else in the cloud - there seems to be an obsession with cloud computing - clearly this is to the advantage of technology companies somehow - probably in terms of increasing their already huge profits and to allow companies to more easily comply with the so called "need to keep data and make it accessible" to 3rd party agencies.

For now the only answer to this issue is to set up the rule in Mail that runs a script to play a sound (earlier in this thread) . In the long term I suspect it will involve using a different mail client and abandoning apple mail.

There are legitimate reasons to use POP 3 for email and to have its functionality damaged to the extent it has been without warning is unacceptable.

I was very interested to read your post. I, along with others, suspected that it was the case that Apple no had an interest in supporting POP3 accounts, but hoped that perhaps it was only a 'conspiracy theory,' and that we were all just being cynical.

They're certainly keeping very tight lipped about this, as I know that many others have reported this same problem to them. Does this mean, then, that in the next IOS the incoming mail 'Bing' will also disappear, because at the moment in works perfectly on the iPhone/iPad. As you have said, if Apple are deliberately phasing these elements out, they should state it openly, rather than simply hoping that no-one will notice their disappearance!

well most mobile devices (though not laptops) are probably using IMAP mail accounts... I think the idea is that you still want your emails to 'land' on your computer but in the mobile world you just want to be able to respond while you are 'away' from 'your computer'... and for that it does make sense that such mobile versions of accounts are IMAP.

My feeling is that Apple just assumed people would not be concerned - or even be aware of - the type of email accounts thy are using - not exactly a conspiracy theory - more another arrogant change with undisclosed consequences. Now that the world cannot function without the kind of communication technology has provided for us (which is great) companies are developing ways to take more control over that communication system - at some point I expect they will squeeze more out of us all - either in terms of finance or compliance... individualism and a non-conformist use of technology will become harder... This is not exclusive to Apple.

I have used Apple computers for 30 years or so because they have always been the best for what I want to do with them... while there have undoubtedly been fantastic improvements in that time which I welcome - there has also been a trade off in some areas of functionality and individual control - the very things that made Apple the best - for me the balance of those trade offs and the lack of giving people the information to make appropriate choices is a sad consequence ... and a kind of lack of respect for another person (each one of us who use their computers). I will find ways around the new limitations - there are always ways to do that but I really think Apple (if they have abandoned POP 3 support) should have made that clear so that I could have chosen not to install El Capitan (in fact I have not installed it on my other computers). I also feel they have some kind of duty to make it possible to go back to the previous system if they have not provided warnings about the consequences of "updating" the system.

AS I said already the long term answer to this problem will probably be a different email client.. but at some point when the Cloud takes over it may not be possible to do even that.

I agree with almost all of what you say. However, my mobile devices all use POP 3 accounts, and as yet I have experienced no problems. I too, have used Apple products for many years, but the way things are going I may rethink the way I work.

*It is interesting that in the App Store (UK) that El Capitan has received 224 five star reviews, as opposed to 453 one star reviews. All is not well, I suggest!

indeed all is not well.

It is not a requirement to use IMAP for mobile devices (I too use POP on mine) but I suspect most people use IMAP - anyway it is rather irrelevant now..

Generally I don't bother with rating things but your observation about El Capitan is interesting.. I have not found any improvements particularly - but certainly some failings (in terms of my use of a computer) Yosemite seems better to me - most of the changes in EL Capitan seem to have been cosmetic.. no doubt there are things under the hood that are more efficient but so far this has been a bad trade off
